How to perform it
Seated in an inclined chest press machine, push the handles up and away from the upper chest, then return under control.
- Adjust the seat so the handles sit level with your upper chest.
- Sit with your back flat against the pad and your feet planted.
- Set the shoulder blades down and back against the backrest.
- Take the handles with a grip that feels natural on the machine.
- Press up and away until the arms are nearly straight.
- Stop just short of locking the elbows out.
- Squeeze the chest for a beat at the top.
- Lower the handles slowly over two to three seconds.
- Return until you feel a stretch across the chest.
- Press again without bouncing off the stack.

Common mistakes
Seat set too low or high
If the handles do not start near the upper chest the angle is wrong and the shoulder takes over. Adjust before loading.
Shoulders lifting off the pad
Rolling the shoulders forward to push more weight shifts work off the chest. Keep the blades set.
Bouncing off the stack
Letting the plates crash at the bottom removes tension and loads the joint. Stop short and reverse.
Short partial reps
Pressing only the top half keeps the numbers high and the stimulus low. Use the full available range.
Locking out and pausing
Full lockout with the elbows straight hands the load to the joints. Stop just short.

What the machine incline chest press actually trains
A machine incline chest press is an inclined pressing movement performed on a fixed path machine. You sit against an angled backrest and push the handles up and away from your upper chest.
The pectoralis major does the pressing, with an emphasis shifted upward by the incline. The triceps and anterior deltoid assist.
Coratella and colleagues examined how bench angle affects muscle activity across the pectoralis and the deltoid heads. Inclining shifts emphasis towards the upper chest and increases anterior deltoid involvement, which is the trade every incline press makes. Machine designers generally settle on an angle that captures the upper chest bias without turning it into a shoulder press.
What the machine adds is the removal of stabilisation. On an incline barbell or dumbbell press you spend meaningful effort keeping the load on a path, and on an incline that effort is higher than on a flat bench because the shoulders are working harder to keep the weight over the joint. The machine deletes that cost entirely, and everything you save goes into pressing.
The practical effect is that you can push closer to failure safely, without a spotter and without the last reps degrading into something ugly. Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, but that assumes you can find your limit accurately, and a machine makes that much easier to do.
The cost is the usual one. A fixed path is the machine's path, not yours, and if the handle spacing or angle does not suit your build, you cannot adjust it. Where a good machine fits you, it is an excellent upper chest exercise. Where it does not, dumbbells will always be better.
Setting up and executing
Adjust the seat so the handles sit level with your upper chest at the start. Too low and you press at an awkward downward angle, too high and the shoulder takes over.
Sit with your back flat against the pad and your feet planted. Set the shoulder blades down and back against the backrest.
Take the handles with whichever grip the machine offers that feels natural.
Press up and away until the arms are nearly straight, stopping just short of locking the elbows out. Squeeze the chest for a beat.
Lower the handles slowly over two to three seconds until you feel a stretch across the chest, then press again without letting the plates touch down.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Seat set too low or high is the fault specific to machines and the easiest to fix. If the handles do not start roughly level with your upper chest, the pressing angle is wrong and the shoulder does more of the work than intended. Take the ten seconds to adjust it.
Shoulders lifting off the pad is how people move more weight than they should. Rolling the shoulders forward at the top shifts work off the chest and onto the front delt and the shoulder joint. Keep the blades set against the backrest the whole way.
Bouncing off the stack removes tension at the bottom and drives load into the joints instead of the muscle. Stop just short of the plates touching and reverse under control.
Short partial reps let the numbers look good while the stimulus shrinks. Pallares and colleagues found full range training produced greater strength and hypertrophy gains than partial range training, and a machine makes full range easy to achieve if you choose to.
And locking out fully with the elbows straight lets you rest at the top and hands the load to the joints rather than the chest. Stop just short.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
For muscle gain, three sets of eight to twelve with about ninety seconds of rest. For strength work, three sets of six to ten with two minutes, though machines are less specific to free weight strength than the numbers suggest. In a fat loss phase, three sets of twelve to fifteen with a minute.
The safety of the fixed path means you can genuinely take a set to the last controllable rep, which is a real advantage over incline barbell work performed without a spotter.
Drop sets are easy, since changing the load is one pin move. Two drops on the last set is an efficient way to add volume without adding time.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, so count these towards chest volume. Machine sets count the same as free weight sets for that purpose.
Research on load modality generally finds that when effort is matched, machines and free weights produce similar hypertrophy. Choosing the machine is not a concession, it is a different set of trade-offs.
Progress by weight where the increments allow, and by reps where they are too large a jump.
Where it fits in your split
As a main or second pressing movement in a chest or push session.
On push, pull and legs it goes on push day. On a bro split it can follow or replace the incline barbell press on chest day. On an upper and lower split it is the incline press. On a full body programme it is efficient, since setup is one pin and one seat adjustment.
The strongest case for using it as your main incline press is training alone. Incline barbell pressing to genuine failure without a spotter is not a good idea, and the machine removes that constraint entirely, which usually means you train closer to your actual limit week after week.
The strongest case for keeping free weights first is stabiliser development and the fact that a machine that does not fit your proportions will never feel right. Test both and let the one that lets you press hardest without discomfort take priority.
Once or twice a week, three or four sets.
Variations worth knowing
The incline machine chest press is the near identical alternative most gyms have, with a slightly different handle path and often a different seat geometry. Try both and use whichever fits your frame.
An iso-lateral incline press gives each arm its own handle and arm, so a stronger side cannot compensate for a weaker one.
The incline barbell press is the free weight version, allowing the most load and demanding the most skill.
The incline dumbbell press gives independent arms with a free path and a longer range, and is the best option for a genuine stretch at the bottom.
A Smith machine incline press sits between the two, with a fixed bar path and a bench you position yourself.
And a seated machine shoulder press is the steeper relative if the shoulder rather than the chest is what you want to train.
What the evidence says
Coratella and colleagues examined how bench angle affects muscle activity across the pectoralis major and the deltoid heads, which is the basis for treating an inclined press as an upper chest movement with increased front delt involvement.
Research comparing machines and free weights when effort is equated generally finds similar hypertrophy outcomes, which supports using a machine as a primary movement rather than only as an accessory.
Pallares and colleagues found full range training produced greater gains than partial range training, supporting a complete range rather than the short top-half reps machines make easy to fall into.
Kolber and colleagues reviewed shoulder injuries associated with resistance training and identified loaded end range and flared positions among those most often implicated, which is the reason to keep the shoulder blades set and the seat height correct.
Schoenfeld and colleagues on volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supply the programming, and the machine's safety is what makes the failure guidance practical to apply.
Common questions
Is a machine incline press as good as barbell or dumbbell?
For building chest size, close to it. Research comparing machines and free weights with effort equated tends to find similar hypertrophy. What you lose is stabiliser work and skill transfer to free weight lifting. What you gain is the ability to train to your true limit without a spotter, which for a lot of people produces more hard sets over a year.
What seat height should I use?
Whatever puts the handles level with your upper chest at the start. Too low and you press downward at an odd angle; too high and the movement drifts towards a shoulder press. It is the single most important setting on the machine and it takes seconds.
Should I lock out at the top?
No. Stop just short with a slight bend in the elbows. Full lockout lets the joints hold the load and gives the chest a rest at the point where continuous tension is more useful.
Why is my shoulder doing all the work?
Usually the seat is too low, which raises the pressing angle, or you are rolling the shoulders forward at the top. Fix the seat first, then keep the blades set against the pad through the whole rep. If it persists, the machine's angle may simply be steeper than suits you.
Is this the same as the incline machine chest press?
They are separate machines with slightly different handle paths and geometries, and most gyms have one or the other. Functionally they train the same thing. If your gym has both, use the one whose handle spacing and seat position fit you better.
