How to perform it

Standing with a kettlebell racked on the back of the forearm at shoulder height, press it overhead until the arm is straight, then lower under control.

  1. Clean a kettlebell into the rack position at shoulder height.
  2. Let the bell rest on the back of the forearm with the handle in the palm.
  3. Set the wrist straight and the knuckles pointing up.
  4. Stand with the feet hip to shoulder width.
  5. Squeeze the glutes and brace the abs hard.
  6. Press the bell up and slightly out around the head.
  7. Rotate the palm forwards as the arm straightens.
  8. Finish with the arm locked and the bell over the shoulder.
  9. Pause for a beat with the biceps near the ear.
  10. Lower back to the rack over two to three seconds and press again.

Common mistakes

Bent back wrist

Letting the wrist collapse puts the load in front of the forearm and strains the joint. Keep the knuckles pointing up.

Holding the bell away from the body

A rack position out in front of the shoulder lengthens the lever before you have even started pressing.

Leaning back to finish

Arching turns the press into an inclined one and loads the lower back. Ribs down.

Pressing in a straight vertical line

Your head is in the way. The bell travels slightly out and around, then back over the shoulder.

Fighting the clean instead of the press

If getting the bell into the rack is the hard part, practise the clean separately or go lighter.

What the kettlebell press actually trains

A kettlebell press is a strict overhead press performed with a kettlebell held in the rack position, resting against the back of the forearm at shoulder height, pressed to a locked out arm above the shoulder.

The anterior and lateral heads of the deltoid do the work, with the triceps extending the elbow and the upper traps assisting near lockout. Because the bell hangs off the back of your hand rather than sitting in it, the forearm and grip work continuously, and the abs and obliques resist the sideways pull of a load on one side of your body.

The library already has a standing dumbbell press, a seated barbell press and two machine presses, so the honest question is what a kettlebell adds. The answer is narrow but real.

The load sits behind your wrist. A dumbbell balances over the middle of your hand and a barbell sits in your palm, but a kettlebell's mass hangs behind and below the handle. That does three things. It forces the wrist into a straight, stacked position, because any collapse backwards is immediately obvious and uncomfortable. It loads the forearm through every rep. And it pulls the bell towards your body, so the rack position is close to your chest rather than floating out in front of it.

The path changes as a consequence. The bell travels around your head rather than straight up past it, finishing with the palm rotated forwards and the bell stacked over the shoulder joint.

Saeterbakken and colleagues found that body position and loading modality both change muscle activity and achievable strength in shoulder presses, which is the general principle at work here.

None of this makes the kettlebell press better than a dumbbell press for building shoulders. It makes it different in ways that mostly benefit the wrist, the grip and the person who owns two kettlebells and no bench.

Setting up and executing

Clean a kettlebell into the rack position at shoulder height. The bell should rest on the back of your forearm with the handle sitting diagonally across the palm.

Set the wrist straight with the knuckles pointing up and the forearm close to vertical. Keep the elbow tucked in front of the ribs rather than flared out.

Stand with the feet hip to shoulder width. Squeeze the glutes and brace the abs hard, and expect to feel the side opposite the bell working to keep you upright.

Press the bell up and slightly out, around your head rather than through it, rotating the palm forwards as the arm straightens.

Finish with the arm locked, the biceps near the ear and the bell directly over the shoulder. Pause for a beat.

Lower back to the rack over two to three seconds, letting the bell settle against the forearm, and press again.

The mistakes that cost you the most

A bent back wrist is the fault that separates a good kettlebell press from a bad one. If the wrist collapses, the bell's mass ends up in front of the forearm instead of stacked over it, the lever gets longer and the joint takes a strain it does not need. Knuckles up, forearm vertical, the whole way.

Holding the bell away from the body is the same problem one joint higher. A rack position that floats out in front of the shoulder means you start every rep with a mechanical disadvantage you did not have to accept.

Leaning back to finish is the universal overhead pressing fault and it is worse with a single kettlebell, because you can lean sideways as well as backwards without noticing. McGill's work on trunk training explains why bracing matters here: the torso has to transmit force, not absorb it.

Pressing in a straight vertical line does not work, because your head occupies that line. The bell goes out and around, then back over the shoulder.

Fighting the clean rather than the press is common with heavier bells. If it costs you more than the press, practise it on its own or drop a size.

Sets, reps and rest by goal

Kettlebells come in fixed jumps, usually four kilos, which shapes the programming more than anything else.

For muscle gain, four sets of six to ten per arm with two minutes rest. For strength, four sets of three to six with three minutes. In a fat loss phase, three sets of eight to fifteen with ninety seconds.

Rest is per arm in practice, since pressing the left while the right recovers halves the standing around.

Progression is the awkward part. You cannot add two and a half kilos, so you add reps instead. Work up until you can complete the top of your rep range for every set on both sides, then move to the next bell.

Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, and every set here counts for shoulders, triceps and trunk at once.

Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth, which matters here because the failure rep is where the wrist bends and the torso leans.

Pallares and colleagues found full range training beat partial range work, so lower all the way back to the rack.

Where it fits in your split

Early in a push or shoulder session, as the vertical press.

On push, pull and legs it goes on push day. On a bro split it opens or follows the first movement on shoulder day. On an upper and lower split it serves as the overhead movement. On a full body programme it fits well, because one bell trains both sides in turn and needs no rack.

The realistic case for choosing it is equipment. If kettlebells are what you own, this is your overhead press and it is a perfectly good one. If you have a full gym, a dumbbell or barbell press will load heavier and progress more smoothly.

The second case is the wrist. Some lifters find the stacked wrist position of a kettlebell press more comfortable than holding a bar, particularly if the bar forces the wrist into extension.

Twice a week is sensible, with one heavier session and one lighter one.

Variations worth knowing

The double kettlebell press uses two bells at once, doubling the load and removing the anti-lateral core demand, which makes it the better choice when strength is the goal.

The half kneeling kettlebell press removes the legs from the equation and makes rib flare impossible to hide, which is why coaches use it to teach the pattern.

The bottoms-up kettlebell press balances the bell upside down and turns the exercise into a stability and cuff drill loaded far below your strict press.

The kettlebell push press adds a dip and drive from the legs, letting you handle a bell heavier than you can strict press.

The standing dumbbell overhead press is the closest alternative, with the load centred in the hand and easier progression through smaller weight jumps.

And the seated kettlebell press removes the core demand entirely, which is useful when you want the shoulders to be the only limit.

What the evidence says

Sakoma and colleagues mapped the anatomical and functional segments of the deltoid and showed that the anterior and middle segments drive overhead pressing, which confirms this trains the same muscle as any other press.

Saeterbakken and colleagues compared body positions and loading modalities in shoulder presses and found both change muscle activity and achievable strength, which is the direct evidence that an offset, unilateral load presses differently from a barbell.

Kolber and colleagues reviewed shoulder injuries attributed to resistance training and flagged positions worth treating carefully, supporting a pressing path in front of and around the head rather than behind it.

McGill's work on core training explains why bracing before the first rep matters when a load sits on one side of the body, since the trunk's job is stiffness rather than movement.

Pallares and colleagues found full range training produced better strength and hypertrophy outcomes than partial range work, supporting the return all the way to the rack.

Schoenfeld and colleagues on weekly volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supply the programming, and the latter is worth applying because technique fails before the muscle does.

Common questions

Is a kettlebell press better than a dumbbell press?

No, it is different. The offset load stacks the wrist, works the forearm and pulls the bell in towards you, which changes the path. For pure shoulder growth the dumbbell version loads heavier and progresses in smaller jumps. If kettlebells are what you own, you lose nothing meaningful.

Why does my wrist hurt?

Almost always because the wrist is bending backwards and the bell is sitting in front of the forearm rather than on it. Keep the knuckles pointing up and the forearm vertical. If a size feels impossible to hold that way, it is too heavy.

How do I get the bell into the rack?

By cleaning it, which is a separate skill worth practising on its own. If you muscle it up with a curl, you fatigue the arm before the press starts. Learn the clean light first.

One bell or two?

One if you want the anti-lateral core work and a manageable setup, two if you want to load the shoulders as heavily as possible. Most people benefit from running single bell work for a block and double bell work for the next.

How do I progress when the jumps are four kilos?

By adding reps. Stay at a bell until you can complete the top of your rep range on every set with both arms, then move up and start again at the bottom of the range. Months at one bell size is normal.
