Barbell Front Raise
A front raise with both hands on a bar. It allows more load than dumbbells and locks your hands into one spacing, which not every shoulder likes.

How to perform it
Standing with a barbell held at your thighs, raise it forward with slightly bent arms until it reaches shoulder height.
- Load a barbell lightly and take it with an overhand grip at about shoulder width.
- Stand upright with the bar resting against your thighs.
- Set the feet hip width and brace the abs.
- Set the shoulders down rather than shrugged.
- Fix a slight bend in the elbows that stays constant.
- Raise the bar forward in a controlled arc.
- Keep the bar close to your body rather than swinging it out.
- Stop when it reaches shoulder height.
- Pause for a beat at the top.
- Lower slowly over two to three seconds without touching the thighs.

Common mistakes
Rocking the bar up
A hip thrust to start the movement means the load is too heavy. Stand still.
Grip too wide or too narrow
A spacing that fights your shoulders will show up as wrist or joint discomfort. Shoulder width is the default.
Raising above shoulder height
Past level the traps take over and the front delt does less.
Bending the elbows through the rep
A changing arm angle turns it into a partial curl. Fix the bend.
Overloading because it is a barbell
The bar allows more weight than dumbbells, but the deltoid has not changed size.

What the barbell front raise actually trains
A barbell front raise is a shoulder isolation exercise where you hold a bar in both hands at your thighs and raise it forward until it reaches shoulder height.
The anterior head of the deltoid does the work, with a contribution from the upper chest and some upper trap assistance near the top.
The difference from a dumbbell front raise comes down to two things, one useful and one not.
The useful one is load. Two arms working together on a single bar can lift more than the sum of what feels controllable with two separate dumbbells, partly because the bar stabilises itself between your hands. If you want to load the front delt heavily in isolation, the bar allows it.
The less useful one is that your hands are locked into one spacing and one orientation. A dumbbell lets each arm find its own path and rotate as needed. A bar does not, and for people whose wrists or shoulders dislike that constraint it shows up quickly as discomfort at the top of the range.
Beyond that, the broader question applies with full force: does the anterior deltoid need isolation at all?
Coratella and colleagues examined muscle activity across the deltoid heads during pressing and found substantial anterior deltoid involvement throughout, increasing as bench angle steepens. Overhead pressing loads it heavily. Incline pressing loads it heavily. Anyone pressing regularly has trained the front delt hard, at loads far above what any raise allows.
So this is a well constructed exercise for a muscle that usually does not need it. That is not a reason never to do it, but it is the context.
Setting up and executing
Load a barbell lightly and take it with an overhand grip at about shoulder width. Lighter than you expect.
Stand upright with the bar resting against your thighs, feet hip width, abs braced.
Set the shoulders down rather than shrugged, and fix a slight bend in the elbows.
Raise the bar forward in a controlled arc, keeping it reasonably close to your body rather than swinging it out and away.
Stop when it reaches shoulder height and pause for a beat.
Lower slowly over two to three seconds, stopping before the bar touches your thighs.
If the wrists complain, try an EZ bar, which lets the hands sit at a slight angle.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Rocking the bar up is the standard front raise fault, and it is more tempting with a barbell because the load is higher. A hip thrust to start the movement means the deltoid is not doing the work, which is the only reason to do the exercise.
Grip too wide or too narrow shows up as wrist or shoulder discomfort at the top. Shoulder width is the default, and if it does not feel right, adjust before you decide the exercise is the problem.
Raising above shoulder height passes the work to the upper traps. Kolber and colleagues identify loaded arm elevation above shoulder height among positions worth treating carefully, and there is no extra deltoid benefit there.
Bending the elbows through the rep turns the movement into a partial curl and press. The angle is set at the start and stays.
And overloading simply because it is a barbell is the trap. The bar allows more weight than dumbbells, but the anterior deltoid is the same size it was, and everything above what it can raise cleanly is being lifted by your hips.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Two sets is usually enough, given the pressing volume most programmes already contain.
For muscle gain, two sets of ten to fifteen with a minute of rest. For strength, three sets of eight to twelve with ninety seconds. In a fat loss phase, two sets of twelve to twenty with forty five seconds.
Slow the descent to two or three seconds. The loaded range is short and the weights are modest, so tempo is one of the few useful variables.
Because the bar allows more load than dumbbells, this is the front raise variation where you are most likely to drift into swinging. A useful check is to do one set with your back against a wall. If the bar still goes up cleanly, the weight is honest.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy. The relevant number is total anterior deltoid volume across the week, including every pressing set, so add these only if that total is low.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, which suits an exercise whose last reps are where the technique breaks.
Where it fits in your split
At the end of a shoulder or push session, if you are doing them.
On push, pull and legs they close push day. On a bro split they come late on shoulder day. On an upper and lower split they are rarely necessary. On a full body programme, press instead.
The audit is worth doing before you programme these. Count your weekly sets of overhead pressing, incline pressing and flat pressing. If the number is reasonable, the front delts are well covered and lateral and rear delt work will do more for shoulder balance and appearance.
The specific case for the barbell version over the alternatives is that you want to load the front delt heavily in isolation and your wrists tolerate the fixed grip. That is a narrow case, but it is a real one, particularly for people building towards a heavier overhead press who want additional front delt strength work.
Once a week, two sets, is a reasonable ceiling.
Variations worth knowing
The dumbbell front raise gives each arm a free path and lets the hands rotate, which is kinder to the wrists and the more common default.
The cable front raise keeps tension at the bottom of the range where a bar and a dumbbell both give you nothing, and is the best version mechanically.
The plate front raise, holding a single plate in both hands with a neutral grip, is the most comfortable option for most people and controls the path naturally.
An EZ bar front raise uses an angled bar so the wrists sit more naturally, and solves the main complaint about the straight bar.
A snatch grip front raise, with the hands set very wide, changes the leverage considerably and feels quite different, though it is more novelty than necessity.
And the overhead press remains the compound that trains the same muscle with far more load.
What the evidence says
Coratella and colleagues examined muscle activity across the deltoid heads during pressing variations and found substantial anterior deltoid involvement throughout, which is why front delt isolation is usually redundant alongside normal pressing volume.
Research on raise mechanics and deltoid activation shows that arm path and resistance direction change how the deltoid is loaded, supporting the idea that different front raise implements are not simply interchangeable.
Kolber and colleagues reviewed shoulder injuries associated with resistance training and identified loaded arm elevation above shoulder height among positions worth treating carefully, supporting the guidance to stop level.
Research on grip and wrist position in barbell exercises supports the practical point that a fixed hand spacing suits some people and not others, and that an angled bar often resolves the complaint.
Pallares and colleagues found full range training beat partial range training, though a bar cannot load the bottom of this range regardless.
Schoenfeld and colleagues on volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supply the programming.
Common questions
Is a barbell better than dumbbells here?
It allows more load, because two hands on one bar stabilise each other. It also fixes your hand spacing and orientation, which some wrists and shoulders dislike. If you want heavy front delt isolation and the grip feels fine, use the bar. Otherwise dumbbells are more forgiving.
What grip width should I use?
About shoulder width as a default. Wider changes the leverage and can feel awkward at the top; narrower can crowd the wrists. If neither feels right, an EZ bar usually solves it.
Do I need front raises at all?
Usually not. Every overhead and incline press trains the anterior deltoid heavily at loads far above what a raise allows. Audit your pressing volume first, and spend the time on lateral and rear delt work if it is already reasonable.
How high should the bar go?
To shoulder height. Beyond that the upper traps take over and the front delt contributes less, so the extra range is not buying anything.
Why do my wrists hurt?
Usually the grip width, since a straight bar locks the hands into one spacing and one angle. Try adjusting the width first, then try an EZ bar. If neither helps, use dumbbells or a plate, both of which let the hands find their own position.
