How to perform it

Seated in a horizontal leg press with your feet on the platform, press it away until the legs are almost straight, then return under control.

  1. Adjust the seat so your knees start bent past ninety degrees.
  2. Sit with your back and hips flat against the pad.
  3. Place the feet shoulder width on the platform.
  4. Set the toes slightly turned out with the heels down.
  5. Take the handles at the sides of the seat.
  6. Brace the abs and press the platform away.
  7. Stop just short of locking the knees.
  8. Lower under control over two to three seconds.
  9. Bring the knees back towards the chest without lifting the hips.
  10. Reverse smoothly at the bottom and press again.

Common mistakes

Seat set too far back

Starting with nearly straight legs turns the exercise into a short push. Bring the seat in.

Hips rolling off the pad

If the pelvis tucks under at the bottom the lower back rounds. Stop just before that point.

Pushing through the toes

Driving with the forefoot loads the knees and calves instead of the quads. Push through the middle of the foot.

Slamming into lockout

Snapping the knees straight rests the muscles and stresses the joint for nothing.

Assuming it matches the 45 degree press

The horizontal version moves less absolute load. Track them as separate lifts.

What the horizontal leg press actually trains

A horizontal leg press is a seated machine where you press a platform away from you along a level path, with your back supported and your hips fixed in a seat.

The quadriceps do the majority of the work, with the gluteus maximus and adductor magnus contributing more as the knees come deeper towards the chest. The hamstrings contribute little, and the calves and abs work only to stabilise.

Compared with the 45 degree leg press already in the library, three things change.

The first is load. On an angled sled you are pushing a carriage up an incline, and gravity plus the machine's own leverage means the plates on the pins substantially overstate what your legs are moving. A horizontal machine, whether plate loaded or selectorised, generally moves a much lower absolute number for the same effort. That is a bookkeeping difference, not a training one, but it catches people out.

The second is the position of your lower back. On a 45 degree press your hips are already flexed and your pelvis travels with the sled at the bottom of every rep, which is why so many people round their lower back down there. A horizontal press sits you more upright, which for many people means the pelvis stays neutral through a deeper range. If the bottom of the 45 degree press has ever felt like your tailbone was curling under, this is the machine that fixes it.

The third is accessibility. Getting into a horizontal press is sitting down. Getting out from under a loaded 45 degree sled is a small event, which matters for anyone training alone or with limited mobility.

What does not change is the muscles trained. This is quad focused work with a supported spine, and Escamilla and colleagues' comparison of squat and leg press technique shows how foot placement shifts the loading within that.

Setting up and executing

Adjust the seat so your knees start bent past ninety degrees. This setting decides your range, so take a moment on it.

Sit with the back and hips flat against the pad, and place the feet shoulder width on the platform, toes slightly out and heels down.

Take the handles and brace the abs, then press the platform away, stopping just short of locking the knees.

Lower under control over two to three seconds, bringing the knees back towards the chest, and stop just before the hips lift off the seat.

Reverse smoothly at the bottom rather than bouncing, and press again.

The mistakes that cost you the most

Seat set too far back turns this into a short, easy push. If your legs are nearly straight at the start, you are training the top third of the range where the quads are least challenged. Bring the seat in until the knees begin well past ninety degrees.

Hips rolling off the pad is the limit that decides your depth. When the pelvis tucks under, the lower back rounds under load, which is the one position here worth actively avoiding. Find the point just before it happens and make that your bottom.

Pushing through the toes shifts load to the knees and calves and away from the quads. Drive through the middle of the foot with the heel in contact.

Slamming into lockout is common because the horizontal path invites it. Snapping the knees straight rests the muscle and stresses the joint for no benefit.

And assuming the load matches the 45 degree press leaves people feeling weak on a machine that is simply counting honestly. Log them separately.

Sets, reps and rest by goal

This is accessory quad work, so it lives in moderate to high reps.

For muscle gain, four sets of ten to fifteen with two minutes rest. For strength, four sets of eight to twelve with two minutes. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty five with ninety seconds.

High rep sets are where this machine earns its keep. Because you are seated and supported, a set of twenty stays technically clean long after a squat would have deteriorated, and the machine makes it trivially safe to push to the point where the platform stops moving.

Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, so most sets can end there, with the last set of the exercise going further if you want it.

Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy. The leg press is one of the cheapest places to buy leg volume, because the recovery cost outside the legs is close to zero.

Drop sets work well here, since changing the load is a pin or a plate and you are already in position.

Write down the seat setting and foot position, because both change the exercise more than the load does.

Where it fits in your split

After the main squat pattern, in a leg session.

On push, pull and legs it follows the squat on legs day. On a bro split it goes second or third. On an upper and lower split it is accessory quad work. On a full body programme it is quick and requires almost no setup.

Its role is volume. The main squat pattern does the heavy structural work and costs the most to recover from; the leg press adds sets on top at a much lower systemic price.

It is also the sensible choice when the lower back has had enough. A session that already contains squats and deadlifts does not need a fourth spinal exercise, and a seated press lets you keep loading the quads regardless.

The one thing it does not do is teach you anything. No balance, no bracing worth mentioning, no skill. That is a fine trade for accessory work and a poor one if it becomes your entire leg training.

Twice a week is comfortable.

Variations worth knowing

The 45 degree leg press is the angled version, allowing considerably heavier absolute loads and a slightly different bottom position.

A single leg horizontal press puts one foot on the platform, doubling the relative load per leg and making side to side differences obvious. Liao and colleagues' review of unilateral training found meaningful effects on strength and performance, so this is more than a novelty.

High foot placement lengthens the hip range and shifts emphasis towards the glutes and hamstrings.

A narrow stance biases the outer quad, while a wide stance with the toes out brings in the adductors.

And the calf press, pressing through the balls of the feet with the knees held straight, turns the machine into a calf exercise, which is one of the more efficient ways to train them at the end of a leg session.

What the evidence says

Escamilla and colleagues compared technique variations during the squat and leg press and found that foot placement and knee position systematically alter the loading pattern, which is the basis for treating stance width and foot height as real programming variables rather than preferences.

Escamilla's review of knee biomechanics in the dynamic squat describes how knee joint forces change through the range, which supports controlling the depth to the point where the pelvis stays neutral rather than chasing the deepest possible position.

Bloomquist and colleagues found deep squat training produced greater muscle adaptation than shallow training, which is the argument for setting the seat so the knees start well past ninety degrees rather than settling for a short push.

Pallares and colleagues found full range training beat partial range training for strength and hypertrophy, reinforcing that the seat setting matters more than the load.

Liao and colleagues reviewed unilateral versus bilateral training and found meaningful effects on strength and performance outcomes, which supports the single leg version as a genuine option rather than a gimmick.

Schoenfeld and colleagues on weekly volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supply the programming, and this machine is one of the easiest places to apply both.

Common questions

How is this different from the 45 degree leg press?

Mechanically the two are close, and there is not much between them for muscle growth. The differences are practical: the horizontal version moves a much lower absolute load for the same effort, sits you more upright so the pelvis tends to stay neutral at the bottom, and is easier to get in and out of. If the 45 degree press makes your lower back round at depth, use this. Otherwise use whichever is free.

Why can I press so much less than on the angled machine?

Because the angled sled carries a large part of its own weight along its rails and adds mechanical advantage, so the plates on the pins overstate what your legs move. A horizontal machine is closer to honest. The number is lower and the work is not.

How deep should I bring the platform?

Until just before your hips start to roll up off the seat. That point is your usable range and it should sit well past ninety degrees of knee bend. Going deeper than the point where the pelvis tucks is where the movement stops being kind to your lower back.

Should I lock out at the top?

No. Stop just short. Locking the knees hands the load to the joint, lets the muscles rest mid set and gives you nothing in return.

Can the leg press replace squatting?

For quad size it can carry a lot of the load, and machines are not inferior to free weights for hypertrophy when effort is equated. What you give up is trunk work, balance and the pattern itself. If you never squat in any form, that is a gap worth filling with a barbell, a machine squat or single leg work.
