How to perform it

With the legs extended on a leg press and only the balls of the feet on the platform, push the platform away by extending the ankles, then let the heels drop under control.

  1. Sit in the leg press and set the back pad so your legs are almost straight.
  2. Place only the balls of the feet on the bottom edge of the platform.
  3. Set the feet hip width apart with the toes pointing forward.
  4. Release the safety catches and take the load on the feet.
  5. Straighten the knees without locking them hard.
  6. Let the heels sink towards the floor until the calves are fully stretched.
  7. Pause for a moment in the stretched position.
  8. Push the platform away by extending the ankles.
  9. Finish high on the toes and hold for a second.
  10. Lower over three seconds and repeat without bouncing.

Common mistakes

Feet too far onto the platform

If the whole foot is on the plate the ankles cannot travel. Only the balls of the feet should be in contact.

Bending the knees to help

Letting the knees flex and extend turns this into a short leg press. Keep them almost straight throughout.

Bouncing off the bottom

A fast rebound uses tendon elasticity instead of muscle. Pause briefly in the stretch instead.

Half reps at the top

Stopping before full plantarflexion removes the squeeze, which is half the point of the exercise.

Leaving the safeties engaged

Some machines will stop the platform mid range. Check the catches are clear before you start.

What the leg press calf raise actually trains

A leg press calf raise is a plantarflexion exercise performed on a leg press machine, with only the balls of the feet on the platform and the knees held almost straight while the ankles push the load away.

Two muscles do almost all of the work. The gastrocnemius is the visible two headed muscle that gives the calf its shape, and it crosses both the knee and the ankle. The soleus sits underneath it, crosses the ankle only, and is larger and more fatigue resistant than most people assume.

Because the leg press lets you hold the knee close to straight, the gastrocnemius is kept at length and takes a large share of the load. Kovács and colleagues found that knee position changes the relative activation of the medial gastrocnemius and the soleus during dynamic plantarflexion, and a straight knee is the condition that favours the gastrocnemius. That is the whole reason to choose a straight leg calf raise over a seated one.

The second thing this machine gives you is loading without spinal compression. On a standing calf raise the weight sits on your shoulders and your spine carries it. Here the seat carries your bodyweight and the load pushes against your feet, so the calves can be loaded heavily without your back, your traps or your balance having a vote.

The third is range. The bottom edge of the platform lets your heels travel well below the level of your toes, which is where the calf is stretched and where the useful work lives.

Be honest about what this is, though. The standing machine, hack squat and Smith machine versions are the same movement with the load applied somewhere else.

Setting up and executing

Sit in the leg press and set the back pad so that your legs are almost straight when the platform is at the start position.

Place only the balls of the feet on the bottom edge of the platform, hip width apart, toes pointing forward. Release the safety catches and take the load.

Straighten the knees without locking them hard. Let the heels sink towards the floor until the calves are fully stretched, and pause there rather than bouncing.

Push the platform away by extending the ankles, finishing high on the toes, and hold the top for a second.

Lower over about three seconds and repeat.

The mistakes that cost you the most

Putting the feet too far onto the platform is the fault that quietly ruins the exercise. If the whole foot is in contact, the ankle has nowhere to travel and the range collapses to a few centimetres. Only the balls of the feet should touch.

Bending the knees to help is the next one. As the load gets heavy the knees start flexing and extending, and what you are doing becomes a short, badly executed leg press. If you cannot keep the knees almost straight, the weight is wrong.

Bouncing off the bottom is the most common fault in all calf training. The Achilles tendon stores and returns elastic energy well, so a fast rebound moves the load with the muscle doing comparatively little. A brief pause removes that free ride.

Half reps at the top waste the other end of the range. Full plantarflexion, up onto the toes, with a genuine pause.

And leaving the safety catches partly engaged is worth checking on machines you do not use often, because it can silently cut the range in half.

Sets, reps and rest by goal

Calves tolerate volume and frequency well, so the programming is straightforward.

For muscle gain, four sets of ten to fifteen with a minute of rest. For strength, four sets of eight to twelve with ninety seconds. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty five with forty five seconds.

The number that matters more than any of those is the tempo. Three seconds down, a pause at the bottom, a hard squeeze at the top. Schoenfeld and colleagues found eccentric and concentric training produce broadly similar hypertrophy, so the slow lowering is not magic; it is simply the only reliable way to stop the tendon doing the work.

Frequency is the other lever. Calves recover quickly and rarely stay sore, so two or three exposures a week beats one long session.

Schoenfeld and colleagues also found a dose response between weekly hard sets and muscle growth, and calves are the body part where most people simply do not do enough sets to find out whether theirs would grow.

Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, which applies here as everywhere else, though a machine calf raise is one of the few movements where actual failure is completely safe.

Where it fits in your split

At the end of a lower body session, after the main lifts.

On push, pull and legs it goes at the end of legs day. On a bro split it sits on leg day or gets bolted onto any session with spare time. On an upper and lower split it belongs in both lower sessions. On a full body programme two or three sets whenever the leg press is free is enough.

The practical argument for this version is queue management. The leg press is often free when the dedicated calf machine is not, and it lets you do calves immediately after your leg pressing without moving.

The argument against it is that some machines have a poor platform edge, so the range suffers. Try it once, and if your heels cannot drop properly, use a different version.

Pair it across the week with a seated calf raise, which covers both the straight knee and bent knee positions, the only meaningful distinction in calf training.

Variations worth knowing

The single leg press calf raise doubles the load on each calf and shows how uneven your sides are.

The machine standing calf raise is the same straight knee movement with the load on the shoulders and your bodyweight in the system.

The seated calf raise bends the knee, which shortens the gastrocnemius and shifts emphasis towards the soleus. It is the one variation that genuinely trains something different.

The hack squat calf raise puts you on a hack squat platform with the load on the shoulders, again a straight knee raise on different equipment.

The donkey calf raise hinges you forward at the hips with the load across the pelvis, which some people find gives a better stretch.

And turning the toes slightly in or out shifts emphasis between the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius, which is a small effect worth alternating rather than agonising over.

What the evidence says

Kassiano and colleagues compared calf training performed at long muscle lengths against full range work and found greater gastrocnemius hypertrophy from the long length training, which is the strongest argument for letting the heels drop as far as the machine allows and pausing there.

Kovács and colleagues found that knee position changes medial gastrocnemius and soleus activation during dynamic plantarflexion, which is why a straight knee version like this one and a seated version are worth doing as a pair.

Pallarés and colleagues reviewed range of motion in resistance training and found full range work generally produced better strength and hypertrophy outcomes than partial range work, supporting the full descent and the full squeeze.

Escamilla and colleagues examined technique variations on the leg press and squat and showed how much foot and joint position changes the loading, which is why the balls of the feet must sit on the platform edge.

Schoenfeld and colleagues compared concentric and eccentric actions and found broadly similar hypertrophy, which reframes the slow negative as a tool for controlling the tendon rather than a special growth stimulus.

Schoenfeld and colleagues on weekly volume found a dose response with muscle growth, and Refalo and colleagues found training close to but not at failure produces comparable hypertrophy, which together set the set count and the stopping point.

Common questions

Is this different from a standing calf raise?

Barely. Both keep the knee close to straight, so both bias the gastrocnemius. The differences are where the load sits, whether your spine is carrying it, and how good the range is on your particular machine. Choose on comfort and availability, not on theory.

Should I lock my knees?

No, but keep them close to straight. A locked knee is uncomfortable under load and a bent knee turns the exercise into a seated calf raise standing up. Almost straight, held there for the whole set.

Why do my calves never grow?

Calf response is genuinely heritable to a large degree, and some people do a great deal of work for very little change. That is not a technique problem and no cue will fix it. What you can control is doing enough sets, using the full range with a pause, and being patient across years rather than weeks.

How high should I go at the top?

All the way up onto the toes, with a pause. The top of the range is short and easy to skip, and cutting it costs you the strongest part of the contraction for no benefit.

Do toes in and toes out really matter?

A little. Rotating the feet shifts emphasis between the two heads of the gastrocnemius, but the effect is small compared with doing enough hard sets through a full range. Alternate if you like variety; do not build a programme around it.
