How to perform it
Standing between two high pulleys with the upper arms out at shoulder height, curl the handles towards your ears and lower under control.
- Set two pulleys to roughly head height or a little above.
- Attach a single handle to each and take one in each hand.
- Step into the middle so both cables are under tension.
- Stagger the feet and brace the abs.
- Raise the upper arms until they are parallel to the floor.
- Straighten the elbows so the handles are out wide.
- Curl both handles towards your ears.
- Keep the upper arms fixed in place throughout.
- Squeeze for a beat at full flexion.
- Lower over three seconds until the elbows are straight.

Common mistakes
Letting the elbows drop
As the set gets hard the upper arms sink towards the ribs, which quietly turns this into an ordinary curl. Keep them level.
Loading it like a barbell curl
The shortened position is weak, so the honest weight here is small. Chasing the stack just recruits your shoulders.
Leaning back into the cables
Rocking the torso backwards moves the load rather than lifting it, and it hides how little the biceps are doing.
Cutting the bottom off
Stopping before the elbows straighten removes the only stretched portion this exercise has left.
Treating it as your main curl
It loads the top of the range and almost nothing else, so it belongs after a curl that loads the stretch.

What the high cable curl actually trains
A high cable curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed with the upper arms raised to shoulder height, curling two high pulley handles in towards your head.
The biceps brachii flexes the elbow and supinates the forearm, the brachialis underneath it contributes regardless of grip, and the brachioradialis helps as the load increases.
What makes this version different is arm position rather than anything mysterious about the muscle. Raising the upper arms flexes the shoulder, and because the long head of the biceps crosses the shoulder as well as the elbow, it starts the movement already shortened at one end. By the time your elbow is fully flexed too, the muscle is about as short as it can get.
That is the whole exercise. Resistance peaks where the biceps is shortest, which is why it feels like a squeeze and why the weight is embarrassing compared with a standing curl.
Whether that is a good thing deserves an honest answer. The evidence on range of motion has moved steadily towards loading the long, stretched positions. Pedrosa and colleagues found partial repetitions performed at long muscle lengths produced better hypertrophy than the equivalent work at short lengths, and Schoenfeld and Grgic's review of range of motion reached a similar conclusion in the muscle's favour when the stretch is included.
The high cable curl is the exact opposite arrangement. It loads the position that evidence suggests matters least.
That does not make it useless. It is comfortable, it keeps constant tension on a muscle that free weights unload at both ends, and it gives you a hard contraction to finish on. It just should not be the curl you build an arm programme around.
Setting up and executing
Set two pulleys to roughly head height or slightly above, and attach a single handle to each.
Take one handle in each hand and step into the middle until both cables are under tension. Stagger your feet and brace the abs so you are not being pulled about.
Raise the upper arms until they are parallel to the floor and straighten the elbows so the handles sit out wide.
Curl both handles in towards your ears, keeping the upper arms exactly where they started. Supinate the wrists as the handles arrive and squeeze for a beat.
Lower over about three seconds until the elbows are straight again, and resist the pull the whole way rather than letting the stack drag you open.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Letting the elbows drop is the fault that defines this exercise. The shortened position is weak, so as fatigue builds the upper arms drift down towards the ribs, where you are stronger. The set continues, the weight keeps moving and you have quietly switched exercises. Fix the upper arms parallel to the floor and treat any sinking as the end of the set.
Loading it like a barbell curl produces the same result faster. This is a position where you have very little leverage. The honest weight is small, and if the stack is heavy enough to be impressive, your shoulders and lower back are supplying the difference.
Leaning back into the cables is the torso version of the same problem. It shifts the load rather than lifting it.
Cutting the bottom off removes the small amount of lengthened work this movement still contains. Pallares and colleagues found full range training produced better strength and hypertrophy outcomes than partial range work, and there is no reason to shorten a range that is already biased towards the top.
And treating it as your main curl is the programming error. It is a finisher.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Light weight, higher reps, short rest. Nothing about this movement rewards heavy loading.
For muscle gain, three sets of twelve to fifteen with a minute. For strength, three sets of ten to twelve with ninety seconds, though biceps strength is not really a goal in its own right. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty with forty five seconds.
Slow the lowering phase to about three seconds. The cable keeps tension on the way back, which is one of the few genuine advantages this setup has over dumbbells, and rushing it wastes that.
Progression is mostly by reps rather than load. Adding a plate to a movement this short on leverage usually means adding body English instead.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, and this is where the high cable curl earns its place: it is an easy way to add two or three more hard biceps sets without needing more recovery.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, though here failure is safe and cheap, so the last set can go the distance.
Where it fits in your split
Late in the session, after the heavier work.
On push, pull and legs it goes at the end of pull day, after rows and after a curl that loads the stretch. On a bro split it sits late on arm day. On an upper and lower split it works as a finisher in either upper session. On a full body programme it is optional and comes last.
The sensible way to use it is as the second or third biceps exercise, paired with something that trains the opposite end of the range. An incline dumbbell curl loads the stretch, this loads the contraction, and between them you have covered the movement properly.
The pairing matters more than the exercise. If you only have room for one curl, pick the one that loads the lengthened position, not this one.
Two sessions a week is fine. The biceps recover quickly, get worked by every row and chin-up you do, and rarely need more than a handful of direct sets per session.
Variations worth knowing
The single arm high cable curl lets you watch one elbow at a time, which is the fastest way to notice that it has been sinking for the last four reps.
A cable curl from a low pulley is the standard version, with resistance heaviest around mid range and a far more useful loading profile.
The incline dumbbell curl is the direct opposite, loading the stretched position hardest, and is the better exercise if you are choosing one.
A rope high cable curl lets the wrists turn freely at the top, which some people find more comfortable than a fixed handle.
The high cable hammer curl keeps a neutral grip throughout and shifts more work onto brachialis and brachioradialis.
And the machine preacher curl gives you a fixed path and a seat, which makes taking a set to genuine failure far simpler.
What the evidence says
Marcolin and colleagues compared curl variants and found the electrical activity of the biceps brachii and brachioradialis shifts with arm and grip position, which supports treating arm position as the meaningful variable here rather than anything about the exercise being special.
Pedrosa and colleagues found partial repetitions carried out at long muscle lengths produced better hypertrophy outcomes than equivalent work at short lengths, which is the clearest argument against making this your primary curl.
Schoenfeld and Grgic reviewed range of motion and muscle development and concluded that fuller ranges, including the stretched portion, generally favour growth.
Pallares and colleagues reached a similar conclusion in their meta-analysis of range of motion and training adaptations, supporting straightening the elbows fully at the bottom of each rep.
Vigotsky and colleagues cautioned that surface electromyography amplitude does not translate directly into growth, which is worth remembering whenever someone tells you a curl variation targets a specific part of the biceps.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, and Refalo and colleagues found sets stopped short of failure grow muscle comparably to sets taken to it.
Common questions
Does this build the biceps peak?
No, and neither does anything else. Peak is a function of muscle shape and where the tendon inserts, both of which are fixed. What you can change is how big the muscle is overall, which comes from total hard sets and effort rather than from curling with your arms held high.
Why is the weight so much lighter than my normal curl?
Because you are working at the shortest length the muscle reaches, where it has the least leverage. That is the intended feature. If the stack looks respectable, check whether your elbows are still level.
Is this different from a low cable curl?
Only in where the resistance is hardest. A low pulley loads mid range and the stretch, a high pulley loads the contraction. They are the same exercise with the tension moved, so there is no case for doing both in the same session unless you have sets to spare.
Should I do one arm at a time?
If your elbows keep drifting, yes. Watching a single arm makes the fault obvious, and it costs you nothing but time. Once the position holds itself, go back to both.
Can I skip it entirely?
Easily. Curls are the least interesting variable in an arm programme, and this one occupies the least valuable part of the range. If your total weekly biceps volume is decent and includes something that loads the stretch, dropping this changes nothing.
