Dumbbell Crush Press

A dumbbell press where you crush the weights together the whole time. The squeeze is the exercise; the pressing is almost incidental.

How to perform it

Lying on a bench with two dumbbells pressed together over the chest, press up and down while squeezing them into each other throughout.

  1. Pick two dumbbells noticeably lighter than your usual pressing weight.
  2. Sit on a flat bench with a dumbbell on each thigh.
  3. Lie back and bring the dumbbells together over your chest with the palms facing each other.
  4. Press them into each other hard and keep that pressure for the entire set.
  5. Set the shoulder blades down and back and plant the feet.
  6. Lower the dumbbells to the middle of your chest with the elbows tucked close.
  7. Keep squeezing inward the whole way down.
  8. Touch the chest lightly, then press back up in a straight line.
  9. Squeeze harder at the top and hold for a beat.
  10. Lower again without ever letting the dumbbells separate.

Key cues

  • Squeeze the dumbbells together before the first rep and never stop
  • Keep the elbows tucked close to the torso
  • Press slowly, since speed is not the point here
  • Use far less weight than a normal dumbbell press

Common mistakes

Letting the dumbbells drift apart

The inward squeeze is the exercise. If they separate, you are doing an ordinary neutral grip press with a light weight.

Going heavy

You cannot squeeze hard and press near maximal weight at the same time. Choose the squeeze and cut the load.

Flaring the elbows

Wide elbows make the dumbbells hard to hold together and shift work to the shoulder. Keep them tucked.

Rushing the reps

The value here comes from sustained tension, not from speed. Slow reps with a hard squeeze beat fast ones every time.

Treating it as your main press

The load is too low for it to build maximal strength. It is an accessory that adds tension, not a replacement for pressing.

Palms facing each other without the squeeze, which allows much more weight.

Plate crush press

Two plates squeezed together and pressed from a bench, if the dumbbells will not sit flush.

The bodyweight equivalent, with the hands close together under the chest.

What the dumbbell crush press actually trains

The dumbbell crush press is a neutral grip dumbbell press performed with the two dumbbells pressed hard into each other for the entire set.

The pressing part is ordinary. Chest, triceps and front delts, elbows tucked, dumbbells to the middle of the chest and back up.

The squeeze is what changes it. Pressing the dumbbells into each other requires horizontal adduction, which is the pectoralis major's primary job. So you have added a continuous, deliberate chest contraction on top of the press, and it does not stop at any point in the range.

That is the appeal. A normal press loads the chest most in the stretched position and least at the top, where the arms are extended and the pecs have little left to do. Crushing the dumbbells together keeps tension on the chest at the top, in the middle and at the bottom, because the inward force does not depend on where your arms are.

It is closely related to the hex press, and in practice the two names describe the same idea. Hex dumbbells have flat faces that sit flush against each other, which makes the squeeze easy to maintain, so that version has become the more commonly named one. The crush press is the broader family, and it works with round dumbbells too, which simply demands more attention to keep them together.

The cost is load. You cannot press near maximal weight while squeezing hard, which caps this firmly as an accessory.

Setting up and executing

Pick two dumbbells noticeably lighter than your usual pressing weight. This is not a lift where you find out how much you can handle.

Sit on a flat bench with a dumbbell on each thigh, lie back and bring them together over your chest with the palms facing each other.

Press them into each other hard, and keep that pressure for the whole set. If you notice the pressure fading, that is the set ending, not a detail to ignore.

Set the shoulder blades down and back and plant the feet. Lower the dumbbells to the middle of your chest with the elbows tucked close, squeezing inward the whole way down.

Touch the chest lightly, press back up in a straight line, and squeeze harder at the top for a beat.

Lower again without ever letting the dumbbells separate.

The mistakes that cost you the most

Letting the dumbbells drift apart is the fault that removes the exercise. Without the inward pressure this is a light neutral grip press, which is a perfectly good exercise but not this one. Round dumbbells make it easier to drift, so check.

Going heavy is the reason drifting happens. Squeezing hard and pressing near your limit are competing demands and the squeeze always loses. Cut the load.

Flaring the elbows makes the dumbbells awkward to hold together and shifts work to the shoulder, which is the opposite of what a chest focused variation should do.

Rushing the reps wastes the mechanism. The whole point is sustained tension, and fast reps deliver less of it than slow ones regardless of how many you complete.

And treating it as your main press misjudges what it is. The load is too low to build maximal pressing strength. It sits after the heavy work, not instead of it.

Sets, reps and rest by goal

For muscle gain, three sets of ten to fifteen with about ninety seconds of rest. For strength work, three sets of eight to twelve, although this is not really a strength exercise and heavy pressing should carry that load. In a fat loss phase, three sets of twelve to twenty with a minute.

Rep counts are moderate to high across the board for the same reason: the squeeze requires a manageable weight.

Slow the tempo deliberately. Two to three seconds down, a pause and a hard squeeze at the top, then the next rep. If a set feels easy, squeeze harder before adding weight, since that is the variable this exercise actually manipulates.

Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, so count these towards chest volume. Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, and here the practical stopping point is when you can no longer keep the dumbbells pressed together.

That is a good signal to train by, because it happens before the pressing strength runs out and it keeps the quality of the set high.

Where it fits in your split

After the heavy pressing, in the accessory block of a chest or push session.

On push, pull and legs it goes on push day. On a bro split it lands second or third on chest day. On an upper and lower split it is a chest accessory. On a full body programme it is a good option when only the lighter dumbbells are free, which is often the case.

Its most practical use is as the exercise that gives you a strong chest stimulus from light weights. That matters in busy gyms, when travelling, when training around a niggle, or simply as the second chest movement when you have nothing heavy left to give.

It also pairs naturally with a wide grip or fly movement, because the two approach the chest from opposite directions: one from a wide stretched position, the other from a narrow contracted one.

Two or three chest sessions a week can each include it without any issue, since the loads are low and the recovery cost is small.

Variations worth knowing

The hex press is the same movement performed with hex dumbbells, whose flat faces sit flush together and make the squeeze effortless to hold. If your gym has them, that is the version to use, and the two terms get used for the same family of work.

An incline crush press moves the squeeze to an inclined bench, shifting the emphasis towards the upper chest while keeping the constant inward tension.

The Svend press is the standing relative, with two plates pressed together and driven forward, and it is the purest expression of the squeeze idea since there is barely any external load at all.

A neutral grip dumbbell press without the squeeze allows far more weight and is the option when loading is the goal.

A plate crush press, squeezing two plates together and pressing from a bench, works when round dumbbells will not sit flush.

And the diamond push-up is the bodyweight equivalent, with the hands close together under the chest.

What the evidence says

Research on chest and triceps muscle activity across pressing variations shows that hand position and the direction of applied force change which muscles contribute and how much. Deliberately generating inward force adds horizontal adduction, which is the pectoralis major's primary action, to a movement that would otherwise be dominated by elbow extension near the top.

Saeterbakken and colleagues examined pressing variations in competitive athletes and found differences in strength and muscle activity across them, supporting the treatment of grip and force direction changes as producing genuinely different exercises.

Research on the triceps heads shows that elbow and shoulder position change which head contributes most, which is relevant because the tucked elbow position here keeps the triceps involved throughout.

Pallares and colleagues found full range training beat partial range training, supporting a full descent rather than shortening the range to maintain the squeeze.

Kolber and colleagues on resistance training shoulder injuries supports the tucked elbow position.

Schoenfeld and colleagues on volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supply the programming.

Common questions

Is this the same as a hex press?

They are the same idea and the terms overlap in everyday use. A hex press specifically uses hex dumbbells, whose flat faces press together cleanly and hold the squeeze for you. A crush press is the broader version and works with round dumbbells too, which simply requires more attention to keep them together. If you have hex dumbbells, use them.

How much weight should I use?

Much less than your normal dumbbell press, often around half. Squeezing hard and pressing heavy are competing demands, and if the weight is high enough that the dumbbells start separating, the exercise has stopped working. Choose the squeeze.

Does the squeeze actually do anything?

Yes. Pressing the dumbbells into each other requires horizontal adduction, which is the chest's main function, and it keeps tension on the chest at the top of the press where a normal press offloads it. That is a real mechanical change rather than a sensation.

Can I do this on an incline?

Yes, and it works well. The incline version shifts emphasis towards the upper chest while keeping the constant inward tension, which makes it a useful pairing with flat crush pressing across a block.

Should this replace my dumbbell press?

No. The loads are too low to build maximal pressing strength, so it sits after your heavy work rather than in place of it. Where it earns its spot is as the second chest movement, or as a way to get a strong chest stimulus on a day when heavy weight is not available or not advisable.
