How to perform it
Holding a low cable handle in each hand, raise the arms out and up on a diagonal until they finish overhead in a Y shape.
- Set two cable pulleys to the lowest position and attach single handles.
- Stand between them and take the left handle in the right hand.
- Take the right handle in the left hand so the cables cross.
- Step forward until the cables are under tension with the arms down.
- Stand tall, brace the abs and keep the ribs down.
- Raise both arms out and up on a diagonal with the thumbs pointing up.
- Keep a slight fixed bend in the elbows.
- Continue past shoulder height until the arms finish overhead in a Y.
- Pause for a beat at the top without shrugging the neck.
- Lower slowly over three seconds back across the body.

Common mistakes
Stopping at shoulder height
Finishing level with the shoulders makes this a lateral raise. The overhead finish is the whole point.
Going too heavy
Weight that stops you reaching overhead defeats the exercise. Light loads are correct here.
Shrugging the neck
Upper traps hunching towards the ears replaces the upward rotation you are after.
Raising straight forward
A front raise path misses the side delt. The arms travel on a diagonal.
Arching the lower back
Leaning back to get the arms up loads the spine instead of the shoulders. Ribs down.

What the cable Y-raise actually trains
A cable Y-raise is a raise performed from low pulleys in which the arms travel out and up on a diagonal until they finish overhead, so the body forms a Y at the top of each rep.
The lateral and anterior heads of the deltoid raise the arms, and the lower trapezius and serratus anterior rotate the shoulder blades upwards to allow the overhead finish. The upper traps contribute, though the aim is to let them assist rather than take over.
Two features make this different from the raises around it in this library.
The first is the diagonal path. A lateral raise takes the arm straight out to the side; a front raise takes it straight forward. The Y splits the difference, roughly in the scapular plane, which many people find is the most comfortable line for the shoulder to travel in under load.
The second, and more important, is that the movement does not stop at shoulder height. Continuing overhead means the shoulder blades have to upwardly rotate, which is a movement pattern that pressing and raising alone do not train directly. Ludewig and Reynolds documented how closely scapular kinematics relate to shoulder joint problems, and the Y-raise is one of the few loaded exercises that trains that upward rotation deliberately.
Be honest about what it is not. Coratella and colleagues found the direction of resistance strongly determines which portion of the deltoid is loaded, and the Y is not the most efficient way to build side delt size. The leaning cable lateral raise, which loads the stretched bottom position, is arguably the most complete side delt exercise available and this is not competing with it.
What the Y-raise gives you is delt work plus scapular control in one light, low fatigue movement.
Setting up and executing
Set two cable pulleys to their lowest positions and attach single handles.
Stand between them, take the left handle in your right hand and the right handle in your left, so the cables cross in front of you. The crossover is what creates the diagonal line of pull.
Step forward until the cables are under tension with your arms hanging, then stand tall with the abs braced and the ribs down.
Raise both arms out and up on a diagonal, halfway between straight out and straight forward, with the thumbs pointing upwards and a slight fixed bend in the elbows.
Continue past shoulder height until the arms finish overhead in a Y. Pause for a beat without letting the shoulders hunch towards the ears.
Lower slowly over three seconds, back across the body, keeping tension throughout.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Stopping at shoulder height is the mistake that removes the reason to do the exercise. If your arms finish level with your shoulders, you have done an awkwardly angled lateral raise. The overhead portion is where the scapular upward rotation happens and it is the part nothing else in your programme covers.
Going too heavy causes the first mistake. The weight at which your arms stop going overhead arrives much sooner than people expect. Loads here are genuinely light.
Shrugging the neck substitutes elevation for rotation. Kara and colleagues found that scapular exercises produce quite different trapezius activation ratios depending on execution, and hunching towards the ears is exactly the pattern that shifts work to the upper traps. Keep the neck long and let the shoulder blades rotate underneath.
Raising straight forward turns this into a front raise, which is a different exercise and a less useful one. The path is a diagonal.
And arching the lower back is the compensation people reach for when their shoulders will not get overhead. Kolber and colleagues reviewed resistance training shoulder complaints and flagged forced overhead positions as worth respecting, so if you cannot reach the Y without leaning back, reduce the load or reduce the height rather than borrowing range from your spine.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Light weight, high reps, short rest. This is finishing work.
For muscle gain, three sets of twelve to twenty with a minute. For strength, three sets of ten to fifteen with ninety seconds, though strength is not really the point. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty five with forty five seconds.
Control the eccentric. Three seconds back down keeps tension through the range and reduces the temptation to use momentum on the way up.
The stopping rule is technical rather than numerical. The set ends when your arms stop reaching a genuine overhead finish, or when your neck starts hunching. Both happen before your delts are anywhere near exhausted, and pushing past either point trains something you did not intend.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, so if shoulder size is the goal, most of your sets should come from pressing and lateral raise work with the Y-raise adding a few on top.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going to failure, which fits neatly here since the last grinding rep on a Y-raise is always the one with the shrug in it.
Where it fits in your split
Late in a shoulder, push or upper session, after the pressing and the heavier raises.
On push, pull and legs it fits on push day after the presses, or on pull day if you are treating it as scapular work alongside your rowing. On a bro split it comes at the end of shoulder day. On an upper and lower split it can go in either upper session. On a full body programme it works well as a low fatigue finisher.
It is a genuinely useful exercise to keep in permanently, at low volume, for reasons that have little to do with size. Loaded overhead reaching with controlled scapular rotation is a pattern most gym programmes never train, and it costs three light sets a week.
If you are short on time and shoulder size is the priority, this is the movement to cut before your presses or your lateral raises.
Variations worth knowing
The prone Y-raise, face down on an incline bench with very light dumbbells, loads the top of the range hardest and is the version most used for scapular work specifically.
A single arm cable Y-raise allows more range and lets you use a heavier handle, at the cost of taking twice as long.
The band Y-raise, with a band underfoot, increases tension as you approach the overhead position, which matches the point where the movement is hardest to complete.
The cable lateral raise is the pure side delt option, finishing at shoulder height with a cleaner line of resistance.
The cable front raise takes the arms straight forward and emphasises the anterior delt, which most people already get plenty of from pressing.
And the face pull with external rotation covers the rear delts and rotator cuff, which is the other half of the shoulder health picture the Y-raise does not address.
What the evidence says
Coratella and colleagues compared lateral raise variations and frontal raises electromyographically in competitive bodybuilders and found that the direction of resistance determines which part of the deltoid is loaded, which is why a diagonal raise sits between a lateral and a front raise in emphasis rather than replacing either.
Sakoma and colleagues described the deltoid as three functionally distinct segments, supporting the idea that arm path changes which segment does the work.
Ludewig and Reynolds documented the association between scapular kinematics and glenohumeral joint pathology, which is the strongest argument for training loaded overhead reaching with deliberate upward rotation.
Kara and colleagues found trapezius activation ratios vary substantially across scapular exercises depending on how they are performed, supporting the emphasis on a long neck and rotation over shrugging.
Kolber and colleagues reviewed shoulder injuries attributed to resistance training and identified positions worth treating carefully, which supports reducing load rather than forcing an overhead finish.
Schoenfeld and colleagues on weekly volume explains why this is supplementary rather than primary shoulder work, and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure supports ending the set when technique goes rather than when the muscle does.
Common questions
How is this different from a lateral raise?
Two things. The arms travel on a diagonal rather than straight out to the side, and they finish overhead rather than at shoulder height. That second difference is the important one, because going overhead requires the shoulder blades to rotate upwards, which a lateral raise never asks for.
Should I do this instead of lateral raises?
No. For side delt size, a lateral raise is more direct, and the leaning cable version loads the stretched position in a way this cannot. The Y-raise is an addition that covers scapular control, not a replacement for your main width work.
Why can I only use such a light weight?
Because the arms finish overhead with a long lever, which is the least mechanically favourable position available. If the load lets you finish the Y comfortably, the load is right. Anything heavier turns it back into a shoulder height raise.
Do I need to cross the cables?
Crossing them creates the diagonal line of pull and keeps tension on through the full arc, so it is the better setup. You can also work from a single low pulley one arm at a time, which is fine but slower.
Should my palms face down or in?
Thumbs up, palms roughly facing each other at the top. That keeps the shoulders externally rotated as the arms go overhead, which is the more comfortable position for most people and the reason this variation tends to feel better than a high lateral raise.
