Russian Twists
A rotation exercise that most people perform as an arm-waving exercise. The difference between the two is where your ribcage goes.

How to perform it
Seated with the knees bent and the torso leaned back, rotate the torso from side to side.
- Sit on the floor with the knees bent and the heels resting lightly on the ground.
- Lean the torso back to roughly forty five degrees, keeping the chest lifted and the spine long.
- Hold a light weight, a medicine ball or nothing at all in front of your chest.
- Brace the abs so the ribcage stays connected to the pelvis rather than flaring.
- Rotate the torso to one side, turning the shoulders and ribcage rather than only the arms.
- Let your head and eyes follow the rotation so the neck does not stay locked forward.
- Bring the weight down towards the floor beside your hip if you want a fuller range.
- Pause briefly at the end of the rotation under control.
- Reverse smoothly and rotate to the other side without swinging through the middle.
- Keep the reps slow enough that you could stop at any point in the range.

Common mistakes
Waving the arms
If the hands travel side to side while the shoulders and ribcage stay square, nothing has rotated. The obliques do not care where your hands are. Turn the ribcage.
Going too fast
Speed lets momentum swing the weight from side to side and turns the exercise into a series of catches. Slow down until you could stop the weight at any point in the arc.
Rounding the back
Leaning back further than you can hold with a long spine collapses the chest and loads a rounded lower back under rotation. Lean back less and keep the chest lifted.
Too much weight
This is a small movement for small muscles under a long lever. A heavy ball produces swinging rather than rotation. Most people are well served with five kilograms or less.
Treating it as a main core exercise
Russian twists are a reasonable accessory. They are not a substitute for anti-rotation work, planks or loaded carries, and they will not do more for your midsection than those do.

Variations and swaps
Feet elevated Russian twist
Lifting the heels off the floor removes the base of support and increases the demand on the whole abdominal wall. The standard progression.
Weighted Russian twist
Holding a plate, dumbbell or medicine ball. Add weight slowly, because the lever is long and small increases feel large.
Cable rotation
Standing rotation against a cable at chest height. A better loading option than a hand-held weight, since the resistance stays constant through the arc.
Pallof press
The anti-rotation counterpart. You resist rotation rather than produce it, and it is arguably the more useful of the two.
Landmine rotation
A barbell in a corner, rotated from side to side. Loadable and standing, which suits people who dislike sitting on the floor.
Bicycle crunch
Combines flexion with rotation lying down. Similar muscles, less lower back position to manage.
What Russian twists actually train
Russian twists train trunk rotation. The obliques do most of the work, the internal oblique on the side you are rotating towards and the external oblique on the opposite side, with the rectus abdominis and the deep trunk muscles helping to hold the position.
The seated lean-back position is doing two jobs at once. It creates a static demand on the whole abdominal wall simply to keep you from falling backwards, and it puts the torso in a position where rotating requires the obliques to work against gravity and the weight in your hands.
That combination is why the exercise feels harder than it looks. It is also why it goes wrong so often: as the static demand builds, the rotation quietly stops happening and the arms take over.
Escamilla and colleagues compared common abdominal exercises and found rotational variations shift contribution towards the obliques compared with straight flexion work. That is the reasonable case for including some rotational work rather than doing crunches alone.
The honest caveat is that the obliques are already involved in almost everything you do in a gym. Every squat, every carry, every single-arm press requires them to resist rotation and side bending. Russian twists add something specific, but they are an accessory to that, not a foundation.
Setting up and executing
Sit on the floor with the knees bent and the heels resting lightly on the ground. Lean the torso back to roughly forty five degrees, keeping the chest lifted and the spine long.
That last part matters more than the angle. Lean back only as far as you can hold with a long spine. If the chest collapses and the lower back rounds, you have gone too far and the exercise has become a slouch under load.
Hold a light weight in front of your chest, or nothing at all if you are new to it. Brace the abs so the ribcage stays connected to the pelvis.
Rotate the torso to one side, turning the shoulders and ribcage rather than moving the hands. Let the head and eyes follow so the neck is not locked forward while the torso turns underneath it. Pause briefly at the end of the rotation, then reverse smoothly without swinging through the middle.
Keep it slow enough that you could stop the weight at any point in the arc. That single rule fixes most of what goes wrong.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Waving the arms is the defining fault. The hands travel from one side to the other while the shoulders and ribcage stay square to the ceiling, and no rotation has occurred at all. The obliques respond to what the ribcage does, not to where the hands are. If you cannot tell whether you are rotating, watch your shoulders rather than your hands.
Going too fast is the second, and it usually causes the first. Momentum swings the weight across and the movement becomes a series of catches at each end. Slow it down.
Rounding the back is the fault worth taking seriously. Leaning back further than you can hold with a long spine loads a flexed lumbar spine under rotation, and the combination of flexion and rotation under load is one worth being conservative about. Cholewicki and McGill's work on lumbar loading during heavy lifting is a reminder that the spine tolerates load best when it is in a reasonable position. Lean back less and keep the chest up.
Too much weight produces all three. This is a small movement under a long lever, and five kilograms is a real load here.
And treating it as a main core exercise is the programming error. It is a reasonable accessory. It does not replace planks, carries or anti-rotation work.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Moderate reps, light load, controlled tempo.
For muscle gain, three sets of twelve to twenty per side with about a minute of rest. For strength work, three sets of ten to fifteen per side, loaded. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty five per side with shorter rests.
Count reps per side rather than total, and be honest about it. Twenty touches is ten reps.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, though for the obliques it is worth remembering that a great deal of stimulus already comes from your compound work. Refalo and colleagues found stopping short of failure produces comparable hypertrophy to training to failure, which is sensible here since the last few reps are where the rotation disappears and the arms take over.
Progress by adding a small amount of weight or by elevating the feet, not by adding reps indefinitely.
Where it fits in your split
In a short core block at the end of a session, once or twice a week.
On any split, the same rule applies: this is a finisher, not a feature. Three sets take four minutes.
The more useful question is what to pair it with. A balanced core block has a flexion movement, an anti-extension movement such as a plank or a rollout, and something that trains rotation or resists it. Russian twists cover the third category, and a Pallof press covers it from the other direction. Running both is more sensible than doing twists alone.
If your programme already includes loaded carries, single-arm presses and heavy squats, your obliques are getting plenty of work and this is genuinely optional.
Variations worth knowing
Elevating the feet is the standard progression. Taking the heels off the floor removes a base of support and increases the static demand on the whole abdominal wall. Do this before adding weight.
Adding weight is the next step, and it should be done in small increments. A plate, a dumbbell or a medicine ball all work. The lever is long, so two or three kilograms feels like a real jump.
The cable rotation is a genuine upgrade for loading. Standing at a cable set to chest height and rotating against it gives constant resistance through the arc rather than a load that varies with gravity, and it removes the lower back position problem entirely.
The Pallof press is the anti-rotation counterpart, where you resist a cable trying to turn you. Many coaches consider it the more useful of the two, because resisting rotation is what the trunk does most often under load.
The landmine rotation is the standing loaded version, useful if you dislike floor work.
And the bicycle crunch combines rotation with flexion lying down, which removes the lean-back position and the lower back concern with it.
What the evidence says
Escamilla and colleagues compared common and commercial abdominal exercises and found that rotational variations shift the contribution towards the obliques relative to straight flexion work. That is the basic justification for including rotation in a core block.
Hibbs and colleagues reviewed core training and its translation to performance and injury prevention, and their conclusion is worth carrying into any discussion of ab exercises: core training has value, but the specific claims made for specific exercises usually run ahead of the evidence.
Cholewicki and McGill measured lumbar spine loads during heavy lifting and their work underpins the general caution about combining loaded flexion with rotation. That is not a reason to avoid Russian twists, but it is a reason to keep the spine long, the weight light and the tempo controlled rather than treating this as a place to go heavy.
Vigotsky and colleagues supply the usual caution about surface electromyography. Rankings of ab exercises by activation amplitude are extremely common online and do not establish which produces the best result.
Schoenfeld and colleagues on volume and Refalo and colleagues on proximity to failure give the programming, and neither suggests abs need to be treated differently from any other muscle.
Common questions
Are Russian twists bad for your back?
Not inherently, but they are done badly often enough that the concern is reasonable. The risk comes from leaning back so far that the lower back rounds, then rotating fast under load. Keep the chest lifted, the spine long, the weight light and the tempo slow, and the movement is unremarkable. If you have a history of disc problems, choose the standing cable version or a Pallof press instead.
How do I know if I am actually rotating?
Watch your shoulders rather than your hands. If your shoulders stay square to the ceiling while your hands move from side to side, you are waving your arms. Your ribcage should turn, and you should feel it along the sides of your midsection rather than in your shoulders.
How much weight should I use?
Very little. Five kilograms is a genuine load in this position, and most people should start with none at all until the rotation is clean and the position is stable. If the weight is swinging you rather than the other way round, it is too heavy.
Do they give you obliques?
They train the obliques, which is not the same as giving you visible ones. Whether the muscles show is a body fat question. It is also worth knowing that heavily developed obliques thicken the waist rather than narrowing it, so if a smaller waist is the goal this is not the lever to pull.
Are they better than planks?
No, and they are not trying to be. A plank trains the trunk to resist movement, which is the job it does most often under load. Russian twists train it to produce rotation. A sensible core block includes both, and if you can only do one, most people are better served by the plank.
