How to perform it
Standing side on to a cable with the arms fairly straight, rotate your torso away from the machine and control the return.
- Set a cable pulley to roughly chest height and attach a single handle.
- Stand side on to the machine, about an arm's length away.
- Take the handle in both hands and step across to create tension.
- Set the feet a little wider than the hips.
- Extend the arms so the handle sits in front of the sternum.
- Brace the abs without holding your breath.
- Rotate the ribcage away from the machine.
- Let the near foot pivot as the hips follow the turn.
- Stop when the torso has turned as far as it will go cleanly.
- Return slowly against the cable and start the next rep.

Common mistakes
Pulling with the arms
If the elbows change shape you have turned a rotation into a poor row. Keep the arm shape fixed and turn the ribcage.
Locking the hips down
Deliberately pinning the hips to force rotation into the lumbar spine adds nothing. Let the back foot pivot.
Going too heavy
Loads that force a whole body lurch train momentum. The obliques need a weight you can actually control.
Letting the return snap back
The eccentric is half the exercise and the half most people skip entirely.
Expecting it to slim your waist
Rotation work builds the obliques like any other muscle. It does not spot reduce and it does not narrow you.

The anti-rotation version, resisting the turn instead of producing it.
High to low woodchop
A diagonal rotation from a high pulley, adding a downwards chop.

A seated rotation with a plate or dumbbell, harder to load progressively.
Band twist
The same movement against a band, useful when no cable is free.
Landmine rotation
A barbell in a landmine swung side to side, with a different resistance curve.
What the cable twist actually trains
A cable twist is a standing rotational exercise in which you hold a cable handle in front of your chest with fairly straight arms and turn your torso away from the machine against the resistance.
The external oblique on one side and the internal oblique on the other produce the rotation, working as a pair across the trunk. The rectus abdominis contributes, the transversus abdominis and quadratus lumborum stabilise, and the erector spinae keep the torso upright while it turns.
The reason this exercise matters is simple: it is one of the very few ways to load trunk rotation progressively. Almost everything else in an abdominal programme is either flexion or an anti-movement hold. Rotation is a genuine function of the abdominal wall, and if you never load it, one of the things the obliques do never gets trained.
There is a persistent nervousness around loaded rotation that deserves addressing plainly. Rotating your spine under load is not dangerous. What is unwise is trying to force all the rotation through the lumbar spine while the hips stay pinned, which is what happens when someone is told to keep the hips completely still. The lumbar spine has limited rotation by design; the thoracic spine and the hips have plenty. Let the back foot pivot, let the hips turn with the ribcage, and the movement becomes a whole body rotation resisted by the obliques rather than a lumbar wringing exercise.
The other thing worth saying once: this will not narrow your waist and it will not widen it either. Obliques respond to load like any other muscle, and how your midsection looks is mostly a body fat and structure question.
Setting up and executing
Set a cable pulley to roughly chest height and attach a single handle.
Stand side on to the machine, about an arm's length away, and take the handle in both hands. Step across so there is tension on the cable before the first rep.
Set the feet a little wider than the hips. Extend the arms so the handle sits in front of the sternum, and fix that arm shape.
Brace the abdominal wall without holding your breath.
Rotate the ribcage away from the machine, letting the near foot pivot as the hips follow. Stop when the torso has turned as far as it will go without leaning or losing the arm position.
Return slowly against the cable, resisting the pull the whole way, then begin the next repetition.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Pulling with the arms is the fault that ruins this exercise. As soon as the elbows bend and straighten, you have converted a rotation into a mediocre single arm row and the obliques are barely involved. Fix the elbow angle at the start and treat the arms as a rigid link between the handle and your sternum.
Locking the hips down is the well intentioned mistake. Someone tells you to isolate the obliques by keeping the hips square, and the result is that the lumbar spine, which has perhaps fifteen degrees of rotation in total, is asked to supply all of it. Pivot the back foot.
Going too heavy shows up as a whole body lurch, where the load is moved by swinging rather than turning. The obliques are not large muscles and the honest weight is lighter than it looks.
Letting the return snap back throws away half the set. The eccentric portion of a rotation is where the obliques are lengthening under tension, and it is the part almost everybody rushes.
Expecting it to slim your waist is the last one. It will not. No abdominal exercise burns fat from the abdomen, and rotation work builds muscle rather than removing anything.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Moderate reps and a weight you can control, per side.
For muscle gain, three sets of ten to fifteen per side with a minute rest. For strength, four sets of six to ten per side with ninety seconds. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to twenty per side with forty five seconds.
Progress by adding load, not by adding endless repetitions. The obliques respond to progressive resistance in exactly the way every other muscle does, and a set of fifty unloaded twists is close to useless as a growth stimulus. Moving the pin down one plate every few weeks is the whole game.
Slow the return to two or three seconds. The eccentric is the part of this exercise that people habitually give away, and it costs nothing but attention.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, so if oblique development is a goal, six to twelve hard sets a week across all your rotational and lateral work is a reasonable target.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, which suits a movement where the last rep is usually the one that turns into a lurch.
Where it fits in your split
At the end of a session, after the main lifts, on whichever days you are training the trunk.
On push, pull and legs it can go at the end of any day. On a two day upper split it finishes either session. On a bro split it belongs on abs day or attached to back day. On an upper and lower split it fits neatly into the full body session. On a full body programme, two or three short appearances a week works well.
Do not put it before heavy squatting or deadlifting. A fatigued trunk is the wrong thing to bring to a loaded barbell.
What it should replace is not other abdominal work but the absence of rotation entirely. Most programmes contain flexion work, some contain anti-extension holds, and almost none contain loaded rotation. Two or three sets twice a week fills that gap without crowding anything out.
If you already do woodchops or landmine rotations, you do not also need this. Pick one rotational movement and load it properly.
Variations worth knowing
The Pallof press is the anti-rotation counterpart, where you resist the cable's turn instead of producing one, and it trains the same muscles isometrically.
The high to low woodchop adds a diagonal path from a high pulley, which many people find more natural than a pure horizontal turn.
The low to high woodchop reverses that, finishing above the shoulder, and tends to involve the shoulders more.
The Russian twist is the seated version with a plate or dumbbell, cheaper to set up but far harder to load in small increments.
A band twist reproduces the movement when every cable station is busy, with resistance that increases as you turn.
And the landmine rotation, swinging a barbell in a landmine sleeve, gives a different resistance curve and lets you load it heavily.
What the evidence says
Escamilla and colleagues compared traditional and nontraditional abdominal exercises and found that oblique involvement varies enormously between movements, which is the case for deliberately including a rotational exercise rather than assuming crunches cover it.
In a separate analysis of commercial and common abdominal exercises, Escamilla and colleagues again found wide differences in abdominal and oblique activation, reinforcing that exercise selection matters more than repetition count.
McGill argued for training the trunk to control and resist movement rather than repeatedly bending the spine, and the practical translation here is to rotate through the hips and thoracic spine rather than wringing the lumbar spine.
Cholewicki and colleagues measured lumbar loads during very heavy lifting and showed how sharply spinal demands rise with load and position, which is the reason to keep the weight controllable rather than chasing the stack.
Vigotsky and colleagues cautioned that surface electromyography amplitude does not straightforwardly predict hypertrophy, which is worth remembering whenever an exercise is recommended purely for its activation numbers.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and muscle growth, which applies to obliques exactly as it does to everything else.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping short of failure produces comparable hypertrophy to training to failure, which supports ending each set while you can still turn rather than swing.
Common questions
Is twisting under load bad for my back?
No. What is unhelpful is pinning the hips and forcing the lumbar spine to supply rotation it does not have. Let the back foot pivot so the turn comes from the hips and the thoracic spine, keep the load controllable, and loaded rotation is a normal training movement.
Will this widen or narrow my waist?
Neither, in any way you would notice. Obliques grow like any other muscle when you load them, but the visual width of your midsection is mostly skeletal structure and body fat. Training rotation does not thicken your waist and skipping it does not slim it.
Cable twist or woodchop?
Barely a difference worth arguing about. The woodchop adds a diagonal path and a little more shoulder involvement, the twist is a purer horizontal rotation. Pick whichever feels better and load that one properly rather than doing both badly.
How is this different from a Pallof press?
The Pallof press resists rotation while this produces it. They train the same muscles from opposite directions. A programme with both is slightly more complete, but if you only have time for one, the loaded twist is easier to progress.
How heavy should I go?
Heavy enough that ten to fifteen controlled reps per side is genuinely hard, and light enough that your elbows stay fixed and your torso does not lurch. If you are swinging the stack, that is not extra work, it is a different and worse exercise.
