The Progressive Overload Variable Nobody Logs: How Sleep Decides When the Weight Goes Up

How progression is actually earned
Progressive overload sounds like a plan to add weight every week. In a sane system it is not. Weight is the reward at the end of a queue, and reps come first.

So on paper your one-rep max is intact, yet your working sets, the sets that actually earn reps, come up short. Underneath that, the building slows too. Saner and colleagues put 24 young men through five nights of four-hour sleep and measured muscle protein synthesis, the rate at which muscle is actually built. Sleep restriction pushed it down by roughly 18%. A run of short nights does not just make today's session feel worse. It slows the recovery that was meant to turn this week's work into next week's rep.
So the plateau you are staring at is doing exactly what a plateau should. It is telling the engine you have not earned the next step yet. It is just that the reason is sitting in your sleep, not your spreadsheet.

The instinct after a bad week is to bank a huge lie-in and call it fixed. The evidence points somewhere duller and more useful: it is the run of nights that moves the needle, not any single hero sleep.

- Do not force the weight. A missed rep target under-slept is real information. Let the plateau stand rather than muscling the bar up on a bad week.

Where the evidence runs thin
Honesty first, because this is where most sleep-and-training advice quietly overreaches.
The mechanism studies are small and short. Saner's protein-synthesis work ran on 24 young men over five nights. Knowles and colleagues, reviewing sleep and muscle strength for the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, found that acute sleep deprivation had little effect on single-joint strength and only reduced force on some multi-joint movements. So the honest read is nuanced: your max is fairly robust to a bad night, and it is repeated output and how hard the work feels that take the hit, not raw strength.
The samples are also mostly male, mostly young, mostly lab-controlled with sleep enforced far more strictly than real life. None of these studies tracked whether an under-slept lifter actually failed to add weight over a whole training block, which is the exact claim of interest here. That link, from short sleep to a stalled bar, is a reasonable inference stitched from harder-feeling sessions, lower output and slower recovery. It is not a single study that measured it end to end. Treat sleep as one strong input into your progression, not a lever that fully explains every plateau. Sometimes the bar is stuck because the programme really does need a change.
