How to perform it
Lying flat with the arms overhead, raise the arms and straight legs at the same time so they meet above your hips in a V shape, then lower under control.
- Lie flat on your back with the arms extended overhead.
- Press the lower back into the floor and brace.
- Point the toes and keep the legs straight and together.
- Lift the arms and legs off the floor at the same moment.
- Fold at the hips so the torso and legs rise together.
- Reach the hands towards the feet above the hips.
- Pause for a beat at the top of the fold.
- Lower the arms and legs at the same speed.
- Take about three seconds to return to the floor.
- Touch down lightly and start the next rep without bouncing.

Common mistakes
Legs and torso out of sync
Lifting the legs first and then the torso turns one rep into two half reps. They should rise together.
Bouncing off the floor
Using the rebound of the arms and legs hitting the floor removes the hardest part of the rep.
Bending the knees without meaning to
Knees creeping in shortens the lever and quietly makes the exercise easier. Choose bent or straight deliberately.
Lower back arching at the start
If the back lifts off the floor as you begin, you are past your current strength. Regress to a tuck up.
Doing them for endurance
Long sets of scrappy V-ups build tolerance for scrappy V-ups. Fewer, cleaner reps are the point.

The same fold with bent knees, which is the sensible regression.

The isometric version, which trains the same position without the folding.
Hanging leg raise
The same idea from a bar, with a longer range and easier loading.
Cable crunch
A kneeling flexion movement with a stack, the most progressable alternative.
What the V-up actually trains
A V-up is a floor based abdominal exercise where you lie flat with your arms overhead and raise your arms and straight legs simultaneously until they meet above your hips, forming a rough V shape.
The rectus abdominis does the trunk flexion. The obliques stabilise, particularly against any side to side wobble. The hip flexors, psoas major, iliacus and rectus femoris, raise the legs, and because those legs are straight and heavy, they do a lot of it.
That is the honest description. A V-up is a hip flexor movement with a substantial abdominal component, not the reverse. Hip flexors are muscles and there is nothing wrong with training them, but if you believed this was an isolated abdominal exercise, it is not.
What the V-up genuinely offers is a long range trunk flexion under a long lever, with both ends of your body working at once.
What it does not offer is progression. Your bodyweight is fixed and the only real way to add difficulty is to hold something overhead, which works, though a dumbbell at the far end of a long lever is an awkward tool.
There is also a coordination tax. Getting both ends off the floor at the same instant, with the legs straight and the lower back down, is a skill, and plenty of people with strong abdominals do bad V-ups.
Which leads to the honest summary. The V-up is a hard, respectable bodyweight movement that is not better than a loaded crunch or a hanging leg raise for building abdominal muscle. It is better than both at looking difficult.
Setting up and executing
Lie flat on your back with your arms extended overhead and your legs straight and together.
Press your lower back into the floor and brace before you move. If the back cannot stay down at the start, the full version is too hard for now.
Point the toes, then lift the arms and the legs off the floor at the same moment. This simultaneity is the whole technique.
Fold at the hips so the torso and legs rise towards each other, and reach the hands towards the feet above your hips rather than up at the ceiling.
Pause for a beat at the top of the fold.
Lower the arms and legs at the same speed, taking about three seconds to return, and touch down lightly rather than bouncing into the next rep.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Legs and torso out of sync is the fault that most changes what you are training. Lifting the legs first and then peeling the torso up turns one rep into two easier half reps, and removes the simultaneous demand that made the exercise worth doing. They rise together or it is a different exercise.
Bouncing off the floor is the second, and it is common in high rep sets. The arms and legs slap the floor, the rebound starts the next rep, and the hardest portion of the movement is skipped every time. Touch down lightly.
Knees bending without you deciding to is a quiet way of making the exercise easier while believing you are doing the hard version. Either commit to straight legs or do a tuck up on purpose.
The lower back arching at the start means you have gone past your current strength. The lumbar spine lifting off the floor as the legs come up is the standard signal, and the fix is to regress to bent knees rather than to try harder.
And doing them for endurance is the strategic error. Sets of thirty V-ups are a test of how long you can tolerate a degraded movement. Fewer, cleaner reps train the muscle.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Treat this as a moderate rep bodyweight exercise, not a circuit filler.
For muscle gain, three sets of eight to fifteen with ninety seconds rest. For strength, three sets of six to ten with two minutes, holding a light dumbbell overhead. In a fat loss phase, three sets of twelve to twenty with a minute.
The tempo matters more than the count. Three seconds down, a genuine pause at the top, and no bounce at the bottom turns a set of ten into hard work.
If you want to load it, a two to five kilogram dumbbell held overhead is the practical option, and no heavier than you can control at the start of the rep.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, and the abdominals follow the same rules. A handful of hard sets twice a week beats a nightly hundred.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping a rep or two short of failure produces comparable growth to going all the way, which is convenient here since the reps at failure are the ones that turn into bouncing scrappy half movements.
Where it fits in your split
At the end of a session, on any day.
On push, pull and legs it fits at the end of legs day. On an upper duo split it works as the abdominal finisher on either day. On a bro split it can go anywhere. On upper and lower plus full body, put it in the full body session. On a bodyweight programme it fits anywhere at all, since it needs nothing but floor.
Avoid putting it before heavy squats or deadlifts. Trunk fatigue before a heavy lift is a bad trade, and tired hip flexors are not helpful either. Twice a week is plenty.
Whether it deserves a place at all depends on what else you do. If your abdominal training already includes a loaded flexion movement and something for the pelvic curl, the V-up adds variety and little else. If you train at home with nothing but a floor, it is one of the better options you have.
Variations worth knowing
The tuck up is the same fold with bent knees, which shortens the lever and is the correct regression for anyone whose lower back lifts off the floor.
The weighted V-up, with a light dumbbell held overhead, is the only real way to make the movement progressive, though the increments are coarse.
The jackknife sit-up raises one arm and the opposite leg at a time, adding a rotational element and halving the load on each rep.
The hollow body hold is the isometric version, holding the position rather than moving through it, which teaches the same trunk position with far less coordination demand.
The hanging leg raise takes the same idea to a bar, with a longer range and much easier loading.
And the cable crunch is the most progressable alternative, a kneeling flexion movement against a stack you can add to every week.
What the evidence says
Escamilla and colleagues compared common and commercial abdominal exercises and found that movements lifting both the trunk and the legs produce greater rectus abdominis activity than movements lifting only one end, which is the mechanical case for the V-up.
Escamilla and colleagues also examined traditional and non traditional abdominal exercises and reported meaningful hip flexor involvement in straight leg raising patterns, confirming that a V-up is a shared movement rather than an abdominal isolation exercise.
Escamilla and colleagues' comparison of Swiss ball and traditional abdominal work found that varying the position and stability demand changes the balance between rectus abdominis and oblique activity without transforming the exercise, which is why the many V-up variants are largely interchangeable.
Vigotsky and colleagues warned that surface electromyography amplitude should not be read as a direct prediction of muscle growth, which is a reason to treat activity rankings for abdominal exercises as a guide rather than a verdict.
McGill's review of core training argues that the benefits of trunk training are real but far narrower than commonly marketed, particularly regarding injury prevention. Do V-ups to build abdominal muscle, not as insurance.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, which supports a small number of hard sets rather than long unloaded endurance work.
Refalo and colleagues found that training close to failure is not necessary for growth, so ending the set when the legs start bending is not a lost opportunity.
Common questions
Are V-ups better than sit-ups?
Not meaningfully. Both are trunk flexion with hip flexor involvement, and the V-up simply lifts both ends at once. Neither loads as well as a cable crunch or a weighted leg raise.
Why do my hip flexors do all the work?
Because straight legs are a long, heavy lever and lifting them is the hip flexors' job. That is real and it is not a fault to engineer away. If you want less of it, bend the knees or use an exercise where the pelvis curls rather than the legs rising.
My lower back lifts off the floor. What do I do?
Regress. Bend the knees into a tuck up, or reduce the range so the legs stay higher. The arching means the load has exceeded what your abdominals can currently hold, and pushing through it just trains the compensation.
How do I make V-ups harder?
Slow the lowering to three or four seconds, pause at the top, and stop bouncing at the bottom. When that is easy, hold a light dumbbell overhead. Adding reps past twenty adds tolerance, not muscle.
Should I do these every day?
No. Two sessions a week of a few hard sets does more than a daily set of scrappy ones. The abdominals have no special recovery ability that makes daily work worthwhile.
