How to perform it
Supporting yourself on parallettes or bars with straight arms, hold your legs together and parallel to the floor.
- Set parallettes or dip bars at a height that keeps your feet clear of the floor.
- Grip the bars and press up to a straight arm support.
- Depress the shoulders so your neck is long, not buried.
- Lock the elbows and keep the chest tall.
- Curl the pelvis slightly under before the legs move.
- Lift the knees to the chest in a tuck.
- Extend the legs forwards until they are parallel to the floor.
- Squeeze the quadriceps and point the toes.
- Hold for a set count with the legs level.
- Lower the feet under control rather than collapsing off the bars.

Common mistakes
Shoulders shrugging up
Sinking into the shoulders makes the support unstable and the legs impossible to lift. Drive down through the hands.
Bent elbows
A soft elbow turns the hold into a partial dip and burns the triceps out first.
Leaning back to cheat height
Reclining makes the legs look level without them actually being so. Keep the chest up.
Skipping the tuck
Chasing a full L-sit before you can hold a tuck for thirty seconds just produces bent knees and frustration.
Blaming your abs
Most failed L-sits are limited by shoulder depression, hip flexor strength or hamstring flexibility, not abdominal size.

What the L-sit actually trains
An L-sit is a straight arm support hold in which you press yourself up on bars or parallettes and hold your legs together, straight, and parallel to the floor.
It gets sold as a core exercise, and the abdominal wall does work: the rectus abdominis and the obliques hold the pelvis in a posterior tilt so the legs can stay level rather than sagging. But the abdominal wall is rarely the reason anyone fails an L-sit.
Three other things usually are. The first is scapular depression. Holding yourself in a straight arm support means pushing the floor away and keeping the shoulders down, and that is a specific strength most people have never trained. The second is the hip flexors, meaning psoas major, iliacus and rectus femoris, which are holding your straight legs out horizontally against gravity for the whole duration. The third is hamstring flexibility, because a tight hamstring pulls the knee into a bend the moment the leg goes forward, and no amount of abdominal strength fixes that.
So the honest description is that this is a support skill with a core component. The limiter is leverage, practice and tissue tolerance, not the size of your abs, and it will not build them either. Total training volume in an L-sit programme is small: a few holds of a few seconds each, with no way to add load in small increments.
That is not an argument against training it. It is a genuinely useful skill, it builds straight arm support strength that carries into dips, pressing and every other gymnastic position. It is just an argument against putting it in the place where your abdominal training should be.
Setting up and executing
Set parallettes or dip bars high enough that your feet will clear the floor. Higher bars make the hold much easier while you are learning.
Grip the bars and press up to a straight arm support. Depress the shoulders so your neck feels long rather than buried between them.
Lock the elbows and keep the chest tall. If either goes, the hold is finished.
Curl the pelvis slightly under before the legs move. This is the abdominal part of the exercise and doing it first makes the legs far easier to lift.
Bring the knees to the chest in a tuck, then extend the legs forwards until they are parallel to the floor. Squeeze the quadriceps and point the toes.
Hold for a set count, then lower the feet under control rather than collapsing off the bars.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Shoulders shrugging up is the fault that stops most beginners. If you sink into the shoulders, the support becomes unstable, the ribcage drops and the legs simply will not come up. Ludewig and Reynolds reviewed how scapular position relates to shoulder problems, and the practical version here is that active depression is a trained skill, not something that happens by itself.
Bent elbows turn the hold into a partial dip. The triceps fatigue quickly and you end up quitting for the wrong reason. Straight arms or regress the position.
Leaning back to cheat the leg height is the subtle one. Reclining the torso makes the legs look horizontal relative to your body while they are actually below level relative to the floor. Keep the chest up and be honest about the height.
Skipping the tuck is the impatient error. If you cannot hold a tuck for thirty comfortable seconds, a full L-sit will only ever be a bent knee approximation.
And blaming your abs is the diagnostic mistake. When the legs will not rise, it is usually the hip flexors giving out or the hamstrings restricting the position, not a weak rectus abdominis.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
Time, not repetitions, and short holds practised often.
In a hypertrophy phase, four sets of ten to twenty seconds in the hardest progression you can hold cleanly, with ninety seconds rest. For strength and skill, five sets of five to fifteen seconds in a harder position with two minutes. In a fat loss phase, three sets of fifteen to thirty seconds with a minute.
Progress by changing leverage rather than extending time. Once a position is comfortable for around twenty seconds, extend one leg rather than pushing towards forty seconds. Long holds train endurance in a position you have already mastered.
Practise it often and never to collapse. Skill work responds well to frequent small doses, so three short sessions a week beats one long one, and holds that end while the shape is still good are worth more than holds that end in a heap.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, which is exactly why an L-sit programme is a weak abdominal stimulus: the total volume is tiny compared with a few weighted sets.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping short of failure produces comparable growth to training to failure, which supports coming down early rather than holding until the shoulders give.
Where it fits in your split
Early in a session, treated as skill practice, before anything that fatigues your triceps or shoulders.
On push, pull and legs it goes at the start of push day. On a two day upper split it opens the chest and arms session. On a bro split it fits on abs day or before shoulder work. On an upper and lower split it belongs at the start of an upper session. On a bodyweight programme it is a natural headline skill for push day.
The one place it does not belong is at the end of a session as a finisher. An L-sit performed on fatigued triceps and shoulders becomes a bent arm struggle, and you spend the set practising the wrong shape.
It is also not your abdominal training. If you want a bigger, stronger abdominal wall, do a few sets of something you can load, and practise L-sits separately for the skill.
Three short practices a week, five minutes each, is more than enough.
Variations worth knowing
The tuck L-sit, knees pulled to the chest, is the correct starting point and where most people should spend the first month or two.
The one leg L-sit, with one leg extended and the other tucked, is the cleanest halfway step between tuck and full.
The floor L-sit removes the bars, which demands considerably more shoulder depression and enough space to clear your heels.
The L-sit pull-up holds the leg position while you perform a pull-up, combining two skills and making both harder.
The hanging L-sit uses the same leg position while hanging from a bar instead of supporting on it, which shifts the demand to the lats and grip.
And the V-sit raises the legs above horizontal, which is the next progression once a full L-sit is comfortable.
What the evidence says
McGill argued for training the trunk to hold positions against load rather than repeatedly flexing the spine, and an L-sit is close to a pure example of that approach, whatever its limitations as a volume tool.
Escamilla and colleagues measured abdominal activity across a range of common and commercial abdominal exercises and found large differences between them, which supports the point that a position feeling difficult in the midsection does not automatically make it an efficient abdominal exercise.
In their comparison of Swiss ball and traditional abdominal exercises, Escamilla and colleagues found that positions demanding more whole body control produced greater abdominal involvement, which is consistent with the trunk demand of an unstable straight arm support.
Ludewig and Reynolds reviewed the association between scapular kinematics and shoulder pathology, which supports the emphasis on active shoulder depression rather than sinking into a passive support.
Cholewicki and colleagues measured lumbar loads during heavy lifting and showed how the trunk musculature must stiffen the spine under load, which is the mechanism behind the pelvic tilt that lets the legs stay level.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and muscle growth, which is the clearest reason not to treat a handful of short holds as your abdominal training.
Refalo and colleagues found stopping short of failure produces comparable hypertrophy to training to failure, supporting ending each hold while the shape is still clean.
Common questions
Will L-sits build my abs?
Not meaningfully. They train the abdominal wall isometrically for a few seconds at a time with no way to add small increments of load. Abdominal size responds to progressive, loaded work. Train L-sits for the skill and do something weighted for the muscle.
Why can I not get my legs straight?
Usually hamstring flexibility or hip flexor strength, not abdominal weakness. Tight hamstrings pull the knees into a bend as soon as the legs go forward. Work the tuck and one leg progressions, and spend a little time on hamstring range.
How is this different from an L-sit pull-up?
The L-sit pull-up holds the same leg position while you pull yourself up, so you are combining a support skill with a vertical pull. It is considerably harder and it is a pull-up variation first. Own the plain L-sit before attempting it.
Should I use bars or the floor?
Bars, while learning. Parallettes or dip bars give you room for your feet and let you focus on the position rather than on clearing the ground. The floor version demands much more shoulder depression and is a progression, not a starting point.
How often should I practise?
Three short sessions a week, early in the workout, with holds that end while the shape is still good. Skill work rewards frequency far more than it rewards long, grinding holds once a week.
