How to perform it
Perform a burpee beside a box, then jump over the box, turn and repeat from the other side.
- Stand beside a box that you can comfortably clear.
- Place the hands on the floor and jump the feet back.
- Lower the chest to the floor with the body straight.
- Push back up and jump the feet towards the hands.
- Stand up fully before starting the jump.
- Swing the arms back and dip into a quarter squat.
- Jump up and across, clearing the box completely.
- Land on the far side with soft knees and hips.
- Turn to face the box and set your hands down again.
- Repeat the burpee from the new side and continue.

Common mistakes
Clipping the box
A trailing foot catching the edge is how people fall badly. Use a lower box than your ego wants.
Landing stiff
Straight legs on landing send the impact into the knees and spine. Absorb with the hips and knees.
Half a burpee
Hovering the chest above the floor and skipping the stand turns the movement into something else entirely.
Sagging in the press up
Letting the hips drop loads the lower back at the fastest and least controlled moment of the rep.
Long sets when fresh technique is gone
Once your jumps get low and your landings get loud, the set stopped being productive several reps ago.

Just the jump, repeated, which trains power rather than conditioning.

A horizontal jump after each burpee, which needs floor space rather than a box.

A pull-up replacing the jump, which shifts the demand to the upper body.
What the burpee box jump over actually trains
A burpee box jump over is a conditioning exercise where you perform a burpee beside a box, stand, jump over the box, turn and repeat from the other side.
The quadriceps, glutes and calves drive the jump, the chest, shoulders and triceps handle the press up, and the abs hold the torso together through a sequence that changes direction four times a rep. What it actually trains, though, is your cardiovascular and metabolic capacity, and to a smaller degree your willingness to keep going when your heart rate is at the ceiling.
It does not build muscle. Nothing in the rep is loaded heavily enough or held long enough to matter. Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, and a burpee box jump over is not a hard set of anything. Treat it as conditioning and it is a good exercise. Treat it as training and you will be disappointed.
The interesting question is not what it trains but what it costs. This movement is unusual in that the technical demand rises precisely as your ability to meet it falls. The jump comes at the end of the rep, when you are most fatigued, and it has to clear a solid immovable object. Fatigued jumping over a box is how people end up with bruised shins and worse.
That is not an argument against it, but it is an argument for a lower box than you think you need, and for shorter sets than the exercise invites.
The other honest note is that almost all of its value survives without the box. A plain burpee gets your heart rate to the same place with no clearance risk at all. The box adds difficulty and a target to aim at, not a different training effect.
Setting up and executing
Stand beside a box you can clear comfortably when tired, not when fresh.
Place your hands on the floor and jump your feet back into a plank. Lower your chest to the floor with the body straight, hips in line rather than sagging.
Push back up and jump the feet in towards your hands, then stand up fully. The full stand is part of the rep.
Swing your arms back, dip into a quarter squat and jump up and across, clearing the box completely.
Land on the far side with soft knees and hips, absorbing rather than blocking.
Turn to face the box, put your hands down and start the next rep.
The mistakes that cost you the most
Clipping the box is the one that actually hurts. A trailing foot catching the edge at the end of a fatigued rep drops you onto a hard object at speed. The fix is unglamorous: use a lower box. Nobody has ever been held back by clearing a box too easily.
Landing stiff is the next. Straight legs on landing send the impact straight into the knees, hips and spine instead of into your musculature. Land with the knees and hips bending, quietly.
Half a burpee is the most common technical drift. The chest hovers above the floor, the stand becomes a hunch, and the exercise quietly gets easier while the rep count stays the same. Pallares and colleagues found full range training outperformed partial range training in the gym, and the same instinct applies here: do the whole movement or do fewer of them.
Sagging in the press up loads the lumbar spine in extension at the fastest and least controlled part of the rep. Cholewicki and colleagues measured very high lumbar loads during heavy lifting, and while a burpee is not heavy, a sagging spine repeated at speed while gasping is not a position worth accumulating. Keep the hips in line with the shoulders.
And long sets past the point where the jumps get low and the landings get loud are simply risk with no upside.
Sets, reps and rest by goal
This is an interval exercise, so keep sets short and rest long enough to jump properly.
If muscle gain is the goal, three sets of six to eight with two minutes rest, at the end of a session, is as much as makes sense. More than that starts taking recovery from the training that actually builds something.
For strength, three sets of five with three minutes, treated as a warm up or a conditioning maintenance dose rather than work.
In a fat loss phase, five sets of eight to ten with ninety seconds rest is genuinely hard and genuinely effective as conditioning.
Refalo and colleagues found lifting sets stopped short of failure produced comparable growth to sets taken to failure. That is a hypertrophy finding, but it maps neatly onto a decision here: the reps you get after your jump height collapses are the reps that hurt you, and they buy nothing.
Progress by adding reps or cutting rest, not by raising the box.
Where it fits in your split
At the end of a session, on a day that is not leg day, and not often.
On push, pull and legs it belongs as a short finisher on push day. On an upper and lower split, put it after upper body work. On a bro split it is optional conditioning on a lighter day. On a full body programme it is usable, but expect to feel it in the next session.
The scheduling constraint is not the exercise itself, it is the eccentric load. Repeated landings produce more muscle damage than most conditioning, and that soreness shows up in squats two days later. Schoenfeld's review of squatting kinematics describes how the hip, knee and ankle share the load through a squat pattern, which is the same distribution absorbing every landing you make here.
Once a week is plenty. If you are doing these three times a week, your leg training is quietly paying for it.
Variations worth knowing
The burpee box jump on, jumping onto the box and stepping down, keeps the whole exercise and removes the clearance risk entirely. For most people this is the better choice.
The burpee step over swaps the jump for a step, which keeps the conditioning and drops the impact almost to zero. It is the version for tired legs and busy weeks.
The plain burpee is the honest baseline. No box, no risk, nearly identical demand.
The box jump over on its own, without the burpee, becomes power training rather than conditioning, and should be done fresh and in low reps.
The burpee broad jump replaces the box with distance, which needs floor space and is much kinder to the shins.
And the burpee pull-up shifts the second half of the rep to the upper body, which changes what fatigues first.
What the evidence says
The pool here is a resistance training pool, so what follows applies general principles rather than pretending these studies tested burpees.
Schoenfeld and colleagues found a dose response between weekly hard sets and hypertrophy, which is the clean reason to log this as conditioning rather than counting it towards leg or chest volume.
Refalo and colleagues found sets stopped short of failure produced comparable hypertrophy to sets taken to failure, supporting the idea that the final desperate reps of an interval are optional and, here, actively risky.
Pallares and colleagues found full range training beat partial range training, which is the argument for chest to floor and a full stand rather than the abbreviated version that appears when you are tired.
Schoenfeld's review of squatting kinematics describes how load distributes across hip, knee and ankle through a squat pattern, and that is exactly the mechanism absorbing every landing.
Cholewicki and colleagues measured lumbar spine loads during heavy lifting and showed how quickly compression rises when the torso is poorly braced, which supports keeping the hips in line during the press up rather than letting them sag.
Liao and colleagues compared unilateral and bilateral resistance training for strength and jump performance, a reminder that jump ability is trained by loaded work done fresh, not by jumping while exhausted.
And McGill's work on core training emphasises stiffness under load, which is what the abs are trying and often failing to provide once the reps pile up.
Common questions
Is this better than a plain burpee?
Not meaningfully. The box adds a clearance target and some difficulty; it does not add a different training effect. If you enjoy the box, use it. If you are choosing on merit, the plain burpee gives you the same conditioning with no chance of catching a shin.
What height box should I use?
Lower than you can jump. The relevant question is what you can clear on the last rep of the last set with your heart rate at maximum, not what you can clear fresh. Most people should be using a box that feels almost embarrassing.
Should I jump over or onto the box?
Onto, for almost everyone. Jumping on and stepping down removes the fall risk completely and costs you almost nothing in conditioning. Jumping over is faster, which matters in a competition context and nowhere else.
Will these build my legs?
No. Nothing here is loaded heavily enough or held long enough to drive growth. They make your legs sore, which is muscle damage from repeated landings, not a signal of hypertrophy. Squat and lunge for legs.
How often can I do them?
Once a week for most people. The repeated landings create more muscle damage than typical conditioning and that soreness turns up in your squats two days later. If your leg training is suffering, this is usually the first thing to cut.
